Are there any teachers here .How is the teaching pay and work culture

Hi ALL

I just want to know if anyone can throw any insight into how the teaching culture is in UK.Are they well paid and how we can get into it .It it for a friend .

Well, as a teacher of many years here is my advice...
You have to really love kids to do it. I mean really. There are some nasty kids, some difficult kids, and they can drive you crackers. Their parents can be pretty nasty too. You won't always get gratitude and you'll get lots of blame and abuse. The starting pay is not great, but you can earn a decent wage if you jump through the right hoops. It is incredibly stressful but you do get a few decent holidays. It's not a great time, as there are huge changes going on, and a lot of politics. Don't assume children will love you and it'll always be rewarding. But it can be just the best job and it's never boring. I wouldn't do anything else, but you have to be really tough. I agree with Morse too. It's not a job you'd do for the money, but, if you love the job, it's not too badly paid. Like all these things ~ depends who you are comparing with. Yes it's above average wage, but no, you don't need to worry about getting into the higher tax bracket.

You need a degree and QTS (Qualified Teacher Status).

After 12 years I'm leaving teaching this summer. I agree with Morse, you have to really love it, and you have to be quite resilient. I used to, but since having kids I'm less resilient to stress and nasty kids/parents. I've been assaulted twice this academic year and I've had enough. I might come back to it one day though.
