Hi all,

Hope you can help me with ideas of what i can do with my quals and experience as I don't want to teach anymore but am fed up of being a stay at home mum - want to earn some money.

What options are there if you have:
over 10 years ex of teaching English
An English degree
A pgce
A literacy specialism
english examiner for 7+ years
diploma in education and teaching english as a second language
prior to teaching admin and receptionist roles.

And is there anything I can do on my own? start up? work from home? or in the local area - no travel.

Thank you all.

Same boat here too ! Thirteen years primary, with senior management experience. Now a stay at home mum with dd being severely disabled, but no idea what direction my experiences could take me in. Glad I am not the only one in a weird way! Bumping ...

Private tutor?

Tutoring is evenings/ weekends only though (for primary I guess). Which would leave zero family time. Confused Which is one of the reasons for leaving teaching.

Another in the same boat. Secondary MFL for nearly 20 years and had enough!

Could you be a proof reader? I don't know anything about it but it sprang to mind.

My friend has recently left primary teaching and has set up this little bizniz. She has a background in acting so Shakespeare and drama lessons and a love of language is in her blood somewhat.

I have never heard of anyone making money from proof reading, there are lots of 'courses' that you have to pay for to get the qualification but never heard of it leading to a job.

Exam marking? Invigilation (sp?). Being a 'cover supervisor' at a school?

Can you teach teachers? Not sure how that works.

We have a few ex teachers doing family practitioner work in children's services. They fit well into our teams and seem happy enough

thanks for all your replies. I tried home tutoring but found it too stressful. I need to move away from teaching full stop. I think i will definitely apply for more examining and invigilating.

I'd love to start up my own little business - but don't know where to start. Thank you all for your help and it's lovely to know i am not the only one!

It depends why you loved teaching and why you want to get out of it... If you love working with children but want to get away from a classroom, then something relating to children's services might be good?

If you want to get away from children but what to employ your skills on the subject matter you taught, then that takes you in another direction. For example, if you're an English teacher, then what about copy writing? Or marketing in general because words are the core of all of it. People do make a living from proof reading.

Or if you're a language teacher, then translation work can be lucrative, flexible and interesting.

Hope that helps a little. Good luck!

Have you looked at the book What Colour is your Parachute? It essentially takes the skills you have and encourages you to think about what a next move might be. Haven't completely used it yet although it's on my shelf and I'm going to make this my last teaching year...

Team leader for an exam board? Not all year round though.
I have done some volunteering at my DC's nursery explaining what having Ofsted come is like (had to gen up on the EYFS etc first, and made it VERY clear I am not a foundation stage teacher) and they said other nurseries would pay for that kind of training even from a non early years teacher...could that work, or is Ofsted something you want to forget about forever (I'd certainly love to!!!)

Lots of us in the same boat-wanting to leave teaching after years :(

Is there still an employment crisis-are there actually jobs out there?

I looked in the week and could see very little. I feel totally trapped at the moment.

I work for a publisher doing books for trainee teachers, how about something like that? It's quite competitive and localised at the big companies but there are plenty of smaller companies. Might be worth looking into?

Thanks for all your replies. Very interesting. I taught adults in colleges & private centres - never children. Wouldn't know where to start with them! Ha. I applied for more examining yesterday and the team leader idea would be fab. No I'm in Leeds not London. Yes can understand many people in my position - teaching is nothing like it was. Life is too short to live with so much continual stress. My love is my subject - English, Grammar, literature....
