can my sister be my childminder for a 2 year old

Hi

Yes but if you want help from the government with the costs she will have to become registered. This does not mean she will have to take in other children, but she has to be OFSTED approved.

My next door neighbour became my childminder and only had my son so it is worth it as she will get a grant to buy toys and get her house "child friendly"!!

If she was just looking after your child, I wouldn't bother getting registered to do so. If she has not many toys you could always take some of yours etc

getting registered can take time, lot of paperwork and courses. Obviously this has to be done to be a registered childminder but I wouldn't if I were looking after my Sisters child

It only took 2 weeks to register for my neighbour, as anniebear says you don't have to but my son was there for 22 hours which cost us £200 and the government paid £50 towards it every month because she was registered. It's not much but it does help, you would get more if the hours were longer.

Must be different areas do it differently

It wouldnt take 2 weeks round here

You have to go to a pre registration meeting, then you have to be police checked which would take more than 2 weeks I presume? have your visit and have your house checked etc

and I think you have to complete a 6 weeks (1 night a week) course also but not sure if you can do this before you start minding or afterwards

Hi I'm a childminder. It took me 12-14 wks to get registtered. Your sister is able to look after your children without being registered but it would be illegal if you paid her and also if she needed to claim tax credits she wouldn't beable to if as you need to give a the childcarers registration number to beable to claim these. Hope this helps.
