I'm due back to work in December and have asked if I can go back 3 days a week. Unsurprisingly this has been turned down and I don't really know what to do. if I return full time I'll be required to work evenings and weekends. Dp also works evenings and weekends and neither of us get the same days off every week making childcare pretty much impossible to organise. We have no family nearby to help. I expected my request to be turned down so have been job hunting while on maternity leave but had no success so far. I've been looking for jobs which pay a similar salary to what I'm on now but I'm starting to accept that I might need to look at lower paid jobs.
I'm just wondering if we would get any help in benefits? I've been on the direct gov website but can't seem to work out whats likely. Most of the part time jobs I've seen are for 16 hours on minimum wage, which I would be happy to take but would make us broke if we have to pay £3.50 an hour childcare out of that.
Dp only earns 15k so if I took a 16 hour minimum wage job I think we would qualify for tax credits as our income would be below 26k. However, I've also read that you need to work 24 hours a week to be eligible. I'm so confused!
If I was to work a minimum wage job on 16 hours a week, dp earning 15k - would we get any help? Have tried calling tax credits but lost the will to live on hold for 40 minutes. My only other income this year has been statutory maternity pay so £135 a week. We've didn't qualify for tax credits at the beginning of the year as my estimated income from going back 3 days a week would have taken us over the limit, and last year we were over.
Sorry for rambling, I hope it makes sense!
