Last employer 10 years ago - any good as a referee?

Hi, can anyone help, I've been a SAHM for the last 10 years, I'm filling out a job application and it asks for 2 refs, one of which must be last or most recent employer. Will that be acceptable ? or is that too long ago? Didn't know if a referee has to be from a certain time length ago - arrrrghhhh!
I've been up all night thinking about this, so any advice would be grateful

HI
usually application forms state it has to be within a set period like five years - but if this one doesn't stipulate a time frame, then put it in. The are mainly checking that you have been where you say you have, and not for example at her Majesty's Pleasure!
Also have you done anything more recently like school governor or on the PTA? - perhaps the Head could be one of your referees?
Good luck

Hi thanks for your advice, no there is no time limit on the form and I have done voluntary work with the school so that would do as the other reference, ta!

Make it easy on yourself don't stick referees just write "Referees available on request if job offered".

Unless you get offered the job there is no reason to take up references and they shouldn't really be used as part of the recruitment process. I usually do the above to stop my referees getting 10 phone calls a week from people.

Also if the application is through an agency they'll usually use the referees (esp if they are businesses) and try to drum up some work so its best to keep them to yourself for a while.
