Hello its got worse and i cant get through to my out of hours gp or nhsdirect.

I am 13 weeks pregnant and dont think i have ever had trapped wind.
I have a pain that started under my left boob and moves along to the centre but mainly on the left. The pain is also on the top of my left shoulder and radiates up my neck and down my arm a bit.
if it is trapped wind, how do i get rid of it. i have already been to toilet twice today so it cant be that.
When i breathe in the pain gets worse but the pain is not high up near my lungs or heart more along the breastbone.
thank you

I had that when I was PG, google Chostochondritis, its inflammation where the ribs join the ribcage, a form of arthritis.

It could be wind, some time natural gasses build up and if they dont leave the body they can end up in the shoulder area and cause pain there..weird but true...I dont know how to suggest you get rid of wind though.

Could also be a trapped nerve, or did you over stretch for anything?

no stretching, i 've heard people talking about trapped wind and just thought it may be that.

i called a midwife at my hospital and she said go to a&e? that would be embarassing with just wind. i've been holding on the out of hours gp line and nhs direct for 30 mins.

terrible! They need to sort this out, i would be in a state if i had a sick child. this is why a& e is packed. people just cant wait.

If the MW advises A&E I would go..but ring them first, ask if they have an on-call GP present, sometimes they run a surgery and will be able to give you a time to go rather than your schlep all the way and sit there for hours waiting.

Could also be colic, but I think you would be in more pain than that.

NHS Direct will just advise you A&E specially with you being early pregnant.

Do you know that the baby is in your uterus?
Its possible that the midwife is worried that your pregnancy might be ectopic and that is why she has advised you to go to A+E?

TBH if the midwife has told you to go to A+E then that is what I would do.

I agree with your midwife, go to a&e. You need to make sure it is just bad wind and nothing more serious.

could be any number of things, but if midwife says A&E thats an open pass imo

hello, thank you for your emails.

finally got through to my out of hours gp who are based at my hospital.

they asked me to come in. she checked me out and said it sounds like too much acid.

she advised me to stay clear of all acidic fruit and reduce my carbs so basically not eat what i eat all day to ease my morning sickness. she told me to eat more protein, bananas, natural yogurt and cold milk.

i was not worried about ectopic because i had my scan yesterday and isnt ectopic on the right shoulder? but you never know so i am glad i got checked out.

she also asked if my blood pressure was always high it was 142/81. Last time done it was 118/80. i said no but she didnt seem bothered by it and said it was probably because i was stressed about going in. she tried it again and then it was 138 and was happy with that and the fact it went down.

still high i thought but if she was not concerned then i guess i should not be.

i also got presribed gaviscom.

now will i get through tomorrow with no acidic fruit and minimum carbs???

thats going to be a challenge!

Is it possible you've pulled a muscle?

i wonder if you have gallstones as these are classic symptoms, especially the pain being worse when you breathe in. Gallstones often show themselves during pregnancy and afterwards (when mine reared their ugly heads). The pain is consistent with acid indigestion so might be worth getting checked out if you have continued trouble, that way, you will be well on the way to getting it sorted when you have the baby as you will already be on the waiting list.

You can reduce the likelyhood of pain by reducing the amount of fat in your diet, but i guess as you are pregnant you need to check this with your midwife.

hello

the pain is gone now, my shoulder ached a little still up to this morning and now i dont feel anything.

i dont really eat a high fat diet and eat quite healthy normally but because of my morning (all day) sickness i needed to eat more carbs and fruit to help me keep the queasy feelins away.

if i had gallstones would the pain come and go or just get worse from when the symptoms started?

Thanks

you can have gallstones and not even know it It does come and go - its probably just really bad indigestion though. Just make sure ou keep a good store of gaviscon, probably take some at bed time as a matter of course.
