I dont know NP- Did you have trouble digesting Wheat foods? (Im having trouble digesting these, keep getting a bolus food stuck above my stomach)

No, not bran. Try some of the wheat free/gluten free bread from the FreeFrom section in the supermarket.

It would prob do you good to have a more varied diet anyway

Is it the gluten? You can still eat rice-cakes and possibly oatcakes. There are some threads about coeliac disease which will prob have lots of info about wheat-free things.

yes it is different, gluten is a sort of protein that's found in wheat, oats, rye. When something is gluten free, it's had that protein removed.

Wheat allergy is becoming quite common because we are so reliant on it.

If it's just wheat and not gluten that you are to steer clear of, then you can eat porridge, oat bran, ryvita, there are wheat and gluten free breads in some supermarkets but tbh they fall apart and taste like s*&^ !!

I did find a spelt loaf in asda, but i think there is wheat flour in it

if you are prepared to make your own bread, there is kamut and spelt bread mix available in a lot of places now.

ps i sorted my IBS by avoiding yeast, not wheat but in some respects that's even worse due to yeast being in most things !!!

and very hard given that I, too, am a huge fan of crusty white bread with lashings of butter and marmite

Interestingly a lot of people crave the thing that makes them ill - I was a pastaholic before I was diagnosed as coeliac.

Def no bran.

I have a couple of friends with IBS/colitis who are totally symptom free if they stay gluten free, so it is worth the hassle

you have my sympanthy. I have recently cut out bread products and wheat products as a result of some diy investigations

I too LOVE hot buttered toast with marmite but, I feel soooooooooooooo much better since I have cut these products out that i am finding it quite easy to do without them. I eat rivetas (there are 3 which have wheat in them so check the label), rice cakes, wheat and gluten free crackers made by Trufrom I think that are lovely (got them from Waitrose). I've also eaten more rice and couscous and sometimes have the gluten free pasta although that is an acquired taste .

Go for it NP, you might be so pleasantly surprised with how you feel afterwards that it will be worth giving up the toast.

Hi I am doing India and Neris's Idiot proof diet (similar to Atkins) and therefore have given up all carbs, I don't know if it'll be any good but I can tell you what I eat if it's any help, all wheat free!

Fish, all kinds
spinach, green leafy veg
meat, all kinds without bread, harder to find re sausages but Waitrose do some that have hardly any bread in them
eggs
cheese, all kinds
garlic
onions
butter
mayo
good oils

you would also be able to add fruit and other carby veg (that I don't eat) so carrots and peppers and things

So for breakfast I have either cold sausages or bacon and eggs or scrambled egg or continental type with salami and cheeses

Good luck. I have been doing this since May and it doesn't really cross my mind to eat bread any more. You do have to read labels though it's in a lot of things

You might find that if you can cut it out of your diet completely for a month or so that you will then be able to tolerate it in small amounts.

Eg for lunch I have huge spinach salad with chicken or tuna, anchovies, green beans, eggs, tomatoes, vinaigrette

or crab
or lobster if I'm being extravagent
or prawns
or smoked salmon with cream cheese in it
or tuna mayo without the bread
or salad and cheeses

supper:
chicken breast wrapped in bacon, on bed of roasted veg
fish
steak
home made burgers (made with just mince) and herbs and salad

Try the Antoinette Saville bread, igf you can find it, it is stupidly expensive, but pretty good if you've got a white toast craving.

dh had a problem with wheat a few years ago, and we had a few good recipes (potato spaghetti anyone?!)which i you could try. BTW he doesn't have to much of a problem now, and we eat a lot less wheat than we used to.

nailpolish · 29/08/2008 10:06

I had to cut out wheat for IBS. It completely improved my symptoms. Now I am ok with some wheat but can't eat ordinary bread or drink beer without feeling awful pretty quickly.

You can get some rye breads that are quite light and nice toasted, some are dreadful, you have to find one that suits you. The supermarkets have quite a good range of free from things now like pittas and rolls and cakes. They're not quite the same but you get used to them.

There are lots of nice biscuits and cereals that are wheat free and you can get flour to use in gravy and stuff. I've never liked the rice and millet pastas so I don't eat it but I wasn't that fond of pasta anyway.

Sometimes I think fuck it and just eat what I want and suffer the consequences, having a cream tea on holiday or whatever.
