Is there any point, IYO, in tixylix etc.?

I had a conversation in the early hours with dp about whether or not to go wake dd with some tixylix as she's coughing a lot at night. She's 2.4. I think all that over the counter stuff is sugary water with no point to it. He disagrees.

I swear by Tixylix when my 2 have a cough that is obviously irritating them and keeping them awake. I am not one to use medicines but on occasions such as that then yes I thin that medicines such as Tixylix are a lifesaver as they seem to stop coughing almost immediately.

tixylix worked wonders on dd (6months) cough ceased within 2 days!

I have a dd of 6 and believe me I have tried everything possible that is on the market and IMO nothing works. I have stopped buying them now and only give her calpol and water. My ds (nearly 14 mths) has had a nasty cold and I give him Medised which helps him to sleep.

Are you talking about the Irritating Night Cough Tixylix? If you are, it's fantastic. It has an anti-histamine in it which suppresses the cought during the night so that the child can sleep. It is inadvisible to give it during the day though as the child, if it needs to cough, should indeed cough.

The Medised which Fimbo mentioned contains Paracetamol and an anti histamine which stops the coughing.

I also find either making the bed higher wither by adding books to the pillow end or either adding a couple of pillows as it is when they lie down flat that catarrh runs down the back of the throat causing the cough!

Tixylix works imo and e. Dd had such a bad cough that she couldn't sleep, gave her Tixylix and she slept. Maybe it just knocked her out but I didn't care at the time, frankly!

I agree with you - never worked for me. I asked the doctor once and he said that if the cough isnt waking them up then dont wake them up to give medicine. Saying that there is quite a good "benylin night time cough" medicine that i was reccomended. If it gets worse i go to the doctors for something that ALWAYS clears it up - if not it should just go by itself

Thanks everyone. I've never found, so far, that tixylix does anything much for dd, nothing that a drink and a few moments upright instead of lying down won't do. But I will take a look at the irritating night cough version that someone's mentioned here.

a spoonful of honey works wonders for a cough... it does! really!

the general (even professional) opinion is that cough mixtures do nothing for adults or children. There is temporary soothing as the sensation (obtained equally by that spoonful of honey)of the syrup "carreses" (!) the throat, but there is nothing one can do to cure a cough as it is merely a symtom of another problem eg reunny nose or bad chest.
Medised is good, I agree, and helps them to sleep, but it doesn't actually make them get better any quicker.

Well, we've got a humidifier in her room as she's had coughs on and off for all her life and we've done all the other practical things you can do but she still has these horrible sounding coughing fits in the night.

ALL cough mixtures are supressants and therefore don't cure any ailment... they just give us all a better night's sleep...

I love cough suppressants - they do work, and they stop me killing the person with the irritating cough
