You know what it’s like when it’s three in the morning and you can’t sleep because you can’t stop thinking about something totally pointless, and you need to ask strangers just so you can stop thinking about it and try to get some sleep!

For whatever reason I’ve thought about some medicine I had to take for a week when I was a child in about 1980. It was a weird blue syrupy liquid which was prescribed because I couldn’t stop vomiting for several days. With the benefit of hindsight the vomiting was caused by the stress and anxiety of having to spend a days in the school holidays staying with my abusive father. When I got home my mother took me to the doctor (I must have been really ill as in my family you only went to the doctor if you were nearly dead!) but I don’t remember what my mother or I told the doctor at the time about the cause of the vomiting.

I wondered if anyone could hazard a guess at what the blue syrupy liquid might have been and thus speculate as to what the doctor might have diagnosed it as.

By the way, I know I could ask to see my medical records if I was particularly concerned but a) I’m not THAT interested in what the medicine was and b) I’d hate to read my medical records and see what various doctors have written about me over the years. I think that would make me quite sad (sad as in miserable not sad as In pathetic)

Right, now I’ve got that off my chest maybe I can get to sleep!

I remember that medicine. It seemed to taste a bit like the gas you got at the dentist in my memory.......if that makes sense.
I used to have bad ear infections so maybe it was used for pain? I'd be interested to know too.
My DM had a love of calling doctors to visit and over exaggerating illness. A bit of Munchausens possibly.

I think I might remember that. It might have been a strong antihistamine, which tasted delicious. You had to sign a book to say you'd got it as it was controlled. I cannot for the life of me remember its name, but I think it began with P. I might be barking up the wrong tree completely, but I have memories of something like this in the 70s. Phensedyl or something maybe? Just not sure if it was blue, but it was a bright colour.

Did it make you drowsy? If so possibly an antihistamine like phenergen (promethazine).

I don’t remember it making me drowsy. I do remember being so repulsed by either the taste or texture that I haven’t been able to take similar syrupy liquids like cough medicine ever since!

I think my family must have reverse Munchausens - they deny anything is wrong! I remember falling over on the way to school and cutting my chin open quite badly. We had only just left home so we went back, the blood was mopped up, a plaster was applied then quickly went to school before I was late. I now have quite a big scar on my chin so it possibly needed stitching not just a plaster!

Just remembered something else (clearly typing it out in order to get it off my mind so I could sleep didn’t work), As well as the horrible blue syrup, the doctor said I hate to eat baby food for a week. Although the vomiting had stopped when I got back home (ie to safety), the baby food - or the idea of it - made me feel very nauseous. I can’t even watch adverts for baby food (it’s handy that I am child free!), just thinking about baby food makes me feel sick. Maybe that’s where my ARFID stems from? Who knows.

As skid, I used to be given activated charcoal for upset stomach, vomitting. It was almost black and absolutely disgusting.
