Do I need root canal treatment

I’ve been to the dentist twice over the past 4 months for pain in my upper back teeth. The first visit she replaced a deep filling and said if that doesn’t work it might need root canal treatment. I went back and she took an X-ray which didn’t show anything so she wasn’t convinced and wondered whether it was just sensitive and suggested I use sensodyne toothpaste and see how it was. When she sprayed air on the tooth it was agony and it is painful when I have something cold or hot, otherwise it’s a dull ache that comes and goes.
She said if it didn’t improve to make an appt for root canal. I have an appt for next week but as it comes and goes I’m not sure if it’s the right thing to do.
Does this sound like root canal anyone?

If you feel hot and cold, the tooth is alive with a blood supply and nerves. Root canals are for when the pulp has died and what was the nerves and blood vessels have gone, therefore there is no feeling. It sounds like sensitivity or a leaking filling to me.

Hello!
I had tooth sensitivity and I needed root canal. I was in agony. Hot and cold food/drink was unbearable. You will find a lot of people tell you scary stories about root canal but I can honestly say I didn’t feel a thing (numbed obviously) but nothing afterwards. Don’t worry too much and get it done asap if diagnosed ... i was petrified but wouldn’t be fussed if i needed it again!

Sensitivity to hot stuff in my case was a sign I had an infection.. lead to root canal

When I had that it was an abcess. I had it drained. Then the dentist packed it with antibiotics and closed it. It felt better really quickly.
