wisdom tooth extraction recovery

I had my lower wisdom tooth extracted on 5 days ago, it is still incredibly painful, really swollen and sore. I have spoken to my dentist and they assure me this is normal, however online searches show that swelling should be mainly gone by day 2-3 and things should be improving.

I just wonder how long it has taken for other people to recover from this?

Hi OP

Swelling is normally worse around the 3rd day, it can take a while for swelling to improve. Its quite normal to have swelling and pain at this stage following a wisdom tooth extraction

Make sure you are taking painkillers, we recommend co-codamol alternated with paracetemol and plenty of salt water baths.

If the pain is getting worse Id be concerned about a dry socket. But pain on its own on the 5th day is nothing concerning

It can take longer depending on how easy it was for the tooth to come out. Gave you used salt water rinses. Take paracetamol/ ibuprofen if you are allowed for pain. Things should settle fairly soon

Another who had all 4 removed at once. Hell for 1 week, then roughly another 2-3 to feel normal. Still have raised gums where the teeth were removed over 20 years later. Given all that, was still preferable to the absolutely agony of recurring gum infections from my oddly growing wisdom teeth.
