Wisdom tooth - How long after extraction to feel normal again?

Had an upper right hand wisdom tooth extracted a week ago. I keep thinking it's improving and then I have an off day. It's a bit sore again today, doesn't feel like it's in the socket, more at front of the gum reaching high up. The dentist mentioned something about possible sinus issues afterwards, could it be that? It feels sore when I press on the gum and there's a feeling of pressure and bit of throbbing pain. I'm still doing salt water rinses regularly and corsodyl occasionally. There's still a big hole where the tooth was as I'm pretty sure the clot (or some of it at least) fell out. Spoke to the dentist about that the other day and she said it probably isn't dry socket as I'd be in agony, which I'm not.
I'm conscious that it's been a week now and I'm still having some pain, I wish I could just get a quick appointment with the dentist to check it over but obviously we can't do that at the moment, which isn't helping my anxiety about the whole thing. I didn't have any issues after my left side ones were taken out 8 years ago but had issues with dry socket and infection after having a lower molar out a couple of years back so I'm wary.
I've had problems for nearly all of lockdown with this bloody tooth and it's really getting to me now so if anyone can advise that would be great.

Dentist here. I’d say expect 2 weeks of discomfort after an extraction. Sometimes longer. What you are describing sounds well within the norm.

Hi again

I was posting under another name Cinnabuns on a previous thread about 3/4 weeks ago when you were having problems. I left the thread as was so distressed over the dentists being shut and being in pain etc. I've just seen this post, sorry you are still having problems. I just wanted to say in the end I had both my upper impacted wisdom teeth extracted under IV sedation 12 days ago, mine are still a bit achey now so not completely comfortable. I've finished all antibiotics and painkillers now, it just aches if I am too active or laugh or am tired. Hoping it will disappear over next couple of weeks. I do know it was a difficult extraction and took 90 minutes to do both and I was very bruised and swollen afterwards. I think it takes a while to settle afterwards.

Do you want to be recovery buddies!!???

My dentist also said a good couple of weeks for all pain and swelling to go

@Powerfulpam thanks for your reply 🙂

@sunshinepasta glad you're feeling much better, sounds like you had a right time of it. Thankfully I'm also feeling much better, I had a very straightforward extraction luckily but was still very bruised and sore afterwards. It's still feeling a bit odd now but other than having an annoying hole that things keep getting stuck in (eew!) it's not too bad. If my last one ever makes an appearance I'm going to beg and plead with them to take it straight out! Did you need stitches afterwards? I didn't this time round but remember having them when I had my left side ones out years back.

Thanks for keeping in touch 🙂 It's such a relief when you start to feel normal again isn't it!

Yes a fair few stitches I think - I can see them. Not sure if they are supposed to have come out by themselves now - day 11. It was all a bit of a trauma. I know was a difficult extraction but still quite anxious about healing, after all that.

Glad yours is feeling better. Make sure to take good care xx

Yeah, I'm still doing the salt water rinses minimum 3 times a day. Brushing carefully. After a difficult extraction it will definitely take longer to feel better. Rest rest and more rest is what's needed. Well as much a humanly possible if you're at home with the family all day! Hope you start to feel more like your normal self again soon. X
