First consultation with pediatric nephologist

Does anyone know what happens during this initial consultation? My ds is asking what will happen on Monday and I can't tell him much apart from a vague "tests, maybe a scan." He's feeling pretty nervous about it and I'd like to be able to give him more information so he can prepare himself.

Also starting to worry as the referral letter only reached the hospital on Friday and we've got the appointment just 3 days later - on the nhs! I wonder what was in the referral letter.

What is the reason for the referral ttf?

He's had noticable blood in his urine for a few months. Initially referred to a urologist, his scans/ultrasound were clear and he said as there was blood and some protein in his urine he needed to be urgently referred to a nephrologist. We waited 9 weeks to see the urologist, happy to have a quick appointment with the nephrologist but just wondering what it means.

hello .i cant tell you about chilhood nephritis but my adult daughter had this quite severely 3 yrs go,she too had blood in her water and protein,she could hardly pass any ater ,which was being absorbed back into her body and making her swell up,this was her fingers ,legs and even her head.it caused her immense pain,She had quite a few scans,blood tests etc and have to give numerous 24 hr water tests,they have kept an eye on her for all this time amd im glad to tell you she is now perfectly well. the only real treatment she had was anti-biotics for the throat infection which they thought may of caused it in the first place ,Try not to worry too much,good luck with your son.

Thanks mummylin, glad to hear your daughter is now well. Thing is, apart from the blood in his wee he seems ok. He's not got any swelling as far as I can tell - hopefully that's a positive sign.

yes i think they may ask you for a urine test wjen youge to the hospital.i sure there are varying degrees of the illness.i must hasten to add that dd wasnt ill for 3 yrs ,just that they kept an eye on her for that time.sorry if i got you worried.they may ask you to do the 24 hr test in which they will give you a container to collect over 24hrs.i think you have to disregard first urine in the morning,then continue it.this is to measure urine output and also will be tested.i would like to know how your ds gets on.

Back from hospital earlier today. Ds blood taken for extensive tests and urine sent to lab. Spoke to doc - not sure if it's a kidney or bladder problem. In a couple of weeks he'll get the bloods back and have another ultrasound. Then, if thats all clear he may need a test where they put a camera into his bladder for a proper look. Anyway, he's being well looked after I think.

glad its over for today for him,how old is your ds ? is he passing urine ok ? that was alot of my dd trouble ,she couldnt pass it ,so caused her a lot more problems.I hope they dont take too long till they find your ds problem.
