DD1 is ill with a virus - any advice?

DD1 has had this flu virus since Saturday, but got full blown symptoms on Sunday.

She has had a raging temperature, 39.2 + throughout this time. She has been feeling up and down according to the amount of medicine I've given her.

She threw up during the night and her temperature had improved but now she is cold, with goosepimples and doesn't want a cover over her. She's tucked up in a foetal position she says that she aches all over and her eyes hurt. And she is coughing all of the time. She looks pale and tired - she hasn't had a full nights sleep this week due to being unwell.

I have been giving her 10ml Calpol every 4 hours and 7.5 ml of child nurofen according to Doctors advice 2 days ago. She is drinking water but is not eating.

dh took her to GP yesterday as she had not shown signs of improving, they have said that it is viral.

I know it's only a virus, but I've never seen her so ill and to be going on for a week.

Has anyone got any further advice as to what to do to make her feel better and speed up her recovery?

Thanks in advance.

she's doing these small little moans and she doesn't want me to touch her.

temp is 39.6 and I gave her calpol about an hour ago

Thanks for that - GP rang back and told me to carry on with the same doses. I know that anti-bios won't work but when they don't seem to be improving you don't know what to do.

Hi Margo, sorry your dd is so poorly...its just horrible seeing them that unwell. FWIW, my dd1 had a fluey virus about a month ago - high temps (had a hard time keeping it below 40, with calpol and nurofen) day and night for about five days. If it goes on for more than another day or so, or if she has any pain or change in sx, I would take her back to GP - if only for peace of mind. Meantime, I found lots of stories, DVD, keeping up the meds and fluids the only things I could do...if its any consolation, once they start to get better its usually in leaps and bounds. HOpe its soon! xxx

margo - sorry DD is unwell. I've been to the Dr 3 x this week for DD2. I never saw myself having to do that....

Keep her fluids up. Let her rest and watch telly. Perhaps see if she'll eat biscuits? That was my food of choice when appetite started returning after illness as a kid.

xx

Medised is good for temperatures and colds - it has an antihistamine as well which dries them up and also knocks the out. It does contain paracetamol so should be taken INSTEAD of Calpol.

Margo, I hope your ds is feeling much better, my ds (12 mths) has had this horrible cold for the past few days and calpol was not getting his temp down so I switched to nurofen which brought it down for a few hours before it gradually starts to creep up again. been to see the gp but he said that his body will fight it eventually . the nights have been bad as he is breathing through his mouth. Used Karvol drops on his bedsheets but did not help much. Poor ds nose is sore with the mil constant mopping. just have to ride it out I guess.

My DS2 aged 3 at the time, had something similar just after Christmas. Temperature, aches and pains, tired and fed up. He managed to drink and that was about it.

In the end it last 10 days before he started to get better. We took him to the doctors twice as he seemed to be getting worse in the middle of that time rather than better so I know how worrying it can be.

I think you just have to sit it out. It might help to give her a dose of Benelyn Coughs and Colds - it will help with sleep and it also stops the coughing for my boys. It seems to be the only thing that works for them. Problem is that it only last 6 to 8 hours so you will probably need a dose in the middle of the night. You can use it with Calpol and Ibuprofen too.

It is sooo tiring for both of you isn't it. I hope she gets better soon.

Forgot to say, are you alternating Calpol and Nurofen, every 2 hours, rather than giving the doses at the same time. That seems to be the only way to get the temperature down sometimes.

My dd has the same thing! I've just checked your profile and I live about 2 miles away from you, so it must be something going round the area.

We've been giving her paracetamol (suppositories because she refuses to take medicine - she's only 14 months) and for days it wasn't getting rid of the fever - it was just wavering between 40 and 38 but never lower.

However, this morning, exactly a week since the fever began, she woke up with a normal temperature and is very perky. Still not eating properly yet but has managed a yogurt and a rusk. For what it's worth, yesterday was the worst day yet, so perhaps it has to get worse before it gets better.

Anyway, so no advice really, just wanted to sympathise. Hope your dd gets better soon. This week has been really upsetting for us so I know how you're feeling. Horrible virus.

Many thanks for the sympathy Niecie & temmy and botbot. dd1 seems to be recovering - she has eaten breakfast and lunch.

I think it was the wimpering which was worrying me, it seemed she was in constant pain. Well, I'm hoping for a better night for her tonight.

I hope your los gets better soon botbot and temmy.

Yep, we had lots and lots of whimpering. Heartbreaking isn't it? Hopefully both our dds are over the worst now.

We've just been to A&E and referred to EmDoc.

She has an ear infection and has been given anti bios.

She's been up and down all day. It's such a long time to be suffering with this virus.

There was another little girl waiting to be seen and her temp was 40.1c - bless her. I felt very emotional seeing another lo suffering.
