I've had this from hiking too. It takes a good two or three months to fade and, in my case doesn't disappear completely until the nail grows out.

I have had this. I got mine from wearing boots that were a tad too big so that when I went downhill my foot slipped and it banged the top of the boot, hence the bruise. It takes ages to grow out. There might be dried blood under the nail too which dissipates eventually. As I say, takes a long time.....
