Help! How did you come off mirtazapine??

So I’m trying to come off it, doctor happy with it and when I asked about coming off I said I take it I need to wean myself off it. She said yes, so one every other day for a week or so, one every few days for a few weeks blah blah and was very vague.

I’m on 15mg and for the last week I had it every other day and feel fine, what do I do now? Every second day for a week? Or just every third day or even half a tablet??

Can’t get a doctors appointment for weeks and I want to get off them now as Iv started!

I went cold turkey from 15mg with very little problem but I also take 300mg of Venlafaxine which has probably been something of a cushion.

I'd go to every third day this week, tbh, and see how you get on.

Just looked it up, and apparently, it stays 4-9 days in the body. Maybe stick to every other day for a month altogether, and then decrease further? (If you haven't been able to get a doctor's appointment by then)

Ok thanks. I’m surprised as all Iv read (everything BUT exactly how to come off!) was all about how bad it is, is the withdrawal! 15mg is quite low but Iv been on it 2 years. My only down side of not being on it is struggling to fall asleep when I haven’t taken it!

Yeah I read that. I’m being silly really, I wanted to be off it completely by mid July as I’m going on holiday and Iv put on weight whilst being on it and Iv since read on here quite a few people have and wanted to see if this was the case with me as dieting has done nothing!

Half of 15mg (7.5mg) every other day then off if you want. Or just straight off 15mg. I've found diazepam helpful when coming off quickly but shouldn't need anything like that.

I was on 45mg for some years. Following huge weight gain I decided to just stop taking them. I had no bad experiences whatsoever and just told the GP when I next saw him that I’d stopped. He just nodded!

I gained five stone in a month Blush so I feel your pain on that one! It didn't help that I was already obese Grin I have managed to lose 2 of those, but by goodness it's been a slog.

BUT if you still actually need it, rather than just wanting to lose weight, don't - mirtazapine definitely saved my life, and if you are noticing your mood is deteriorating don't cut down further: stabilise where you are first. There's no reason, if you are feeling better in general that you will still be on it in July, tbh - but better to go slowly than bugger everything up by rushing and ending up worse in the long run.

I stopped about six or seven weeks ago - I'm a bit weepier generally, but nowhere near as bad in that or in anything else as when I started in September 2015.

Good luck Flowers

7.5mg alternate days. See how you feel on that you could even half that dose if you struggle.

They are terrible for weight gain. That's the reason I came off them.

I could probably half the tablet but couldn’t cut any smaller? Half every other sounds good plan.

My weight gain isn’t significant compared to others but enough to make me down on myself which sort of defeats why I went on it Grin mentally I’m in a different place altogether than when I went on it for sure. I know that if I needed to go back on it I would. I’m going to tKe 5htp when I’m off it completely for a while I think.

Thanks. I took half a 15mg tablet last night so will see how that goes, sounds like I’ll be ok though so thank you!

you did you lose weight coming off it or did you have to work to lose the extra weight?

Came off it in January and I've lost maybe a few lbs of it but nothing more drastic than that. Doesn't help that I have PCOS so have always struggled with my weight.

@Hefzi I know this is old but you said this drug saved your life. Could you explain? I am going through awful PAINFUL physical symptoms like burning skin, half a sore throat, ear pain and just so run down. Doctors are pointing everything to anxiety. I don’t know if I should take mirtazapine or not as I’m petrified of the side effects....

Maybe going to half for every day a week
Then Sun, Tues, Thurs, Sat,
The Mon, Weds , Fri,
Then Sun and friday.
Then stop.

I found it an easier one to stop.
If trouble sleeping naybe get an over the counter thing for the odd night.
