Visual auras lasting a few seconds

Has anyone had experience of visual aura without headache or any other symptoms? My older teen DD has been having auras that last a few seconds and then vision returns to normal. She has been having for about 6 months, started off maybe one a week but recently she has a few a day. Optician said it is optical migraine and GP thinks it’s hormone related and to monitor it for a while.

My daughter had similar problems as she approached her periods? Is your daughter about that age?
Unfortunately my daughter went onto develop migraines.

If not this, then maybe, too much screen time? Eye test?
Hope she is better soon x

Thanks for responding. She is just 15, period started a year ago. The auras last a couple of seconds and happen randomly in daytime and with no apparent pattern around period. Frequency has increased but other than being annoying for her are not causing pain. Eye test was fine as was blood test.

How much time does she spend on her phone OP? I ask because last year I was working exclusively on my phone and kept getting these ‘migraines’ lasting a couple of minutes. No pain, just all the flashing and squiggly lights. I had a few every day for about 2 weeks. Then when I got a laptop and left the phone, the ‘migraines’ disappeared.

I suffered with a few a couple of years ago. Attended the eye hospital who said that they could not find any issue.

Just by chance a week later I had to renew my contraceptive pill, the nurse asked me if I had any migraines or auras etc and immediately took me of that pill as I was at risk of having a stroke due to the symptoms I was showing.

But as your daughter is 15 I don't know if my story can relate in this situation.

I get ocular migraines which have no headache. I get migraine headache without auras. Migraine is a bastard to manage. Since realising the first ocular migraine wasn't a stroke, I just sit them out and then carry on as normal. Hope your daughter finds her triggers.

I get ocular migraines which last about 10 minutes. They happen in clusters for perhaps a week then nothing for ages. As I have regular eye tests I haven't worried about it. I was able to give them a name after googling.

Thanks all, I think mobile screen time may be some of the issue and I’m doing my best to limit the time she is on it, I don’t think it’s excessive but probably more than ideal. Interesting to hear of other experiences.

I get these from time to time, no headache either. They are usually around the time of my menstrual cycle. I too have regular eye tests and the optician never finds anything of concern.
