Fungal nail infection? With photo!

Is this a fungal infection (2nd toe nail in on right foot next to big toe).

I have never had anything like this before or athletes foot.

I recall stubbing my barefoot toe hard on a suitcase a few weeks back and am wondering if its a trauma to the nail. A few weeks okay it was not like this, I painted my toes and when I removed it a few weeks later it looked like this. It is thicker than normal too.

My DH has had a nail infection before (not for the last few years) and he says it is not a fungal nail infection, but I am not convinced.
