Broken thermometer - how seriously do I take it?

According to the internet I should call in a SWAT team, the beads of mercury stuck between the floorboards will give off toxic fumes for up to seven months, and I should think about making a will. According to my doctor, it's no big deal, just chuck the mercury in the ordinary trash. Anyone out there have any other advice, perhaps in between the two?!

I know, I know, but these are scientific reports I'm finding, from websites with impressive suffixes like 'gov' and 'edu'. They seem to think that inhalation of the vapour is worse than ingestion. And putting mercury into landfill can't be good advice - can it?

My dad used to play with balls of mercury, rolling int along the cracks in the floorboards and scooppin git up and doing it again.

He and his brothers are fit, well and in their sixties.

I would gather up the mercury as detailed here . Try ringing the council and see how they suggest you dispose of it?
