Hello

My sister in under the care of a cardiac consultant at the local hospital as she has a serious heart condition.

I have been to the Royal Brompton and they have asked her to ask her GP to refer her there. I even have a referral letter that the GP just needs to put her name on!

The GP is being an a**ehole and won't do it, as she is under the care of someone local.

We have been offered genetic testing and the only way to get this is at the Brompton.

What can I do?

xx

Weird that the GP won’t do it, are they against you going elsewhere for some reason? I would ring your local Consultant’s secretary and ask if the referral can be done from there, it would only need an email or phone call.

Isn't the consultant cardiologist able to refer her? It does seem a very specialist thing to ask the GP to refer to?

Look up ‘Patient choice’ on the nhs.uk website

Lots of info there. In many cases you have the legal right to be referred to a consultant/hospital of your choice. I have done this before moved from local hospital to a consultant of my choice at a bigger hospital. GP had no problem doing this.

Good luck
