Hi, I went to the Opticians for an eye test. Whilst there I was told I had a large freckle on my eye. After having another test done involving eye drops to enlarge my eyes I have been referred to the hospital. I have no headaches, flashing lights etc, but I am going on Thursday for my appointment and I am really scared of what I might be told.

Try not to worry too much (I know that’s easy for me to say!). I have a large freckle on the back of my eye ball. When it was first discovered I was referred to the eye hospital for tests and had to go every six months for a few years so they could monitor it. It didn’t change in size or shape so now I just have it monitored at my routine eye exams. Although I do go every year rather than every two years. Hope it goes well on Thursday x

Thanks It's the not knowing which is the hardest part. I know i should be my glass half full, but they do know how to scare you when they first see these things. My optician started telling me what could happen, and it's scared the living daylights out of me

I only went to the opticians because my arms were getting too short when I was reading anything. At times I wish I hadn't bothered

I know what you mean about not knowing being worse! Don’t regret going to the optician. Even if they do discover something which needs treatment, it’s always better to find and deal with things as early as possible. Will keep my fingers crossed that you have the same as me and it won’t cause you any problems going forward x

Did he say where on my eye you had it? On the iris?

Mine is on the back wall of my eyeball if that makes sense? They didn’t know it was a freckle when they found it at first, but that’s how it was described later after several appointments!

nobody's told me where it is. One said a birthmark and one said a freckle

Hi, Well I went to the hospital yesterday and no-one knows for sure whether or not if it is just a freckle or a melanoma, so they are referring me to the eye hospital at Sheffield for more tests. They explained everything really well and if it is a melanoma it can be easily treated and it won't affect my vision, due to its position. Now I know a bit scared I'm not worried. It's a bit like having a mole on your skin which has changed and needs removing.

My DH has this... a melanoma that isn't doing anything, so he is monitored by the eye specialists at regular intervals. So far no problems :)
