DD1 has got chicken pox. Her birthday party is 10 days away. Will she be OK by then?

A boy at DD1's nursery had chicken pox a couple of weeks ago, and this evening I noticed about 10 spots on her.

Her party is in 10 days' time (joint party, hired hall, about 20 children attending, so difficult to rearrange). I know that she will no longer be infectious after all the spots have scabbed over - but how long is that likely to take? Will she be OK for the party?

She will be fine for the party.

should be fine. kids I know seem to be out and about around a week from spots appearing - sooner if they all appear at once.

hope she's not too miserable with it.

They now say you are only infectious for 5 days after the first spot appears

she'll be fine

She'll be fine. And a top tip we had is a paintbrush and pot of calamine or aloe vera gel so she can dab her spots when they itch! Get well soon little one

That's a relief!

The other issue is dd2: if she has already caught it from dd1 then she could be infectious (but not yet have a rash) at the time of the party. Does that mean she should be kept away fromt he party?

both dd2 and then Gecko(dd3) have just had chicken pox. Both of them felt ill for 2 days from the spots coming then the spots had scabbed by the 6th day. I would say she will be totally fine

No, anyone at any time could be sickening for chickenpox

no need to take elaborate quarantine measures

(you could just mention it to anyone who you know would have serious problems with it? eg mothers with very young babies, pregnant but not immune women)

Incubation period is 11-21 days. The infectious period is from roughly 2 days before spots appear until they dry up.

Can I bring my ds? I've exposed him to chicken pox 4 times and he still hasn't caught it!

In your position I would take her to the
party if she doesn't have spots.
Even though she may be about to have it, she also may not.

Thanks everyone. At least dd1 will still be able to look forward to her party.

We just have to get through the next few days now. I like the calamine/paintbrush tip.
