Anyone 'young' had a hip replacement?

Hello! After some wise words of wisdom...

I had a right total hip replacement just over 2 years ago. Metal on ceramic, uncemented. I am 45 Shock so young to have one. I had perthes disease when I was 8 and had extensive surgery then. I am not hugely overweight but not a skinnie Minnie either.

Anyhoo, back in Jan, so 18 months post op I started getting occasional but awful pain down my thigh in the night. Saw consultant and he said as it's not a cemented prosthesis (as no doubt I'll need a re do in my 60s) it's just the tip that hasn't settled, and can happen out of the blue with the odd pain 18 months to 2 years after. X ray fine, bloods fine. Pain then disappeared. Hooray.

Until nearly 3 weeks ago. Standing in bedroom and turned and it gave way, same area, excruciating pain, nearly passed out. This has been going on nearly daily and buggered up my holiday (got back yesterday). It's all around where the tip of the prosthesis is and is now going near the groin. I'm back to using a bloody stick, walking slowly, naproxen 500mg twice a day and paracetamol too. Children are 8 and 5 and get upset when they see me in a heap in tears.

I am fed up. Obviously going to go back and see consultant. Reputable chap in London. I'm due back in work tomorrow and am terrified of the tube now with a bloody stick and a wonky leg with a mind of its own. Ffs.

Anyone heard of this/ experienced it, anything?

Yours desperately x

Hi OP,

I'm really sorry that you're having pain with your hip. I don't have experience but my dad does. He's had 3 replacements after perthes as a child. His original replacement was replaced because the two components started rubbing against each other as he walked. Maybe this is happening with yours? Albeit earlier than my dad's and it's being attributed to settling because it's so soon?

I'm sure the consultant will check it out properly and give you the help you need.

Huge virtual hugs for you and Flowers, this is the only time id ever seen my dad cry so I know it must be incredibly painful.

As a quick aside, he found that when recovering that swimming really helped to get moving again. That might not help you now but maybe when you're feeling up to it.

X

Thanks Frog for the speedy reply!

Hugs aplenty to your dad!!!

Weirdly I had a great recovery until the pain 18 months ago - fine for 6 months, and now this.

Yes, swimming and cycling have been advised. I'm very jealous of all the local joggers! Swimming is a faff with little ones and our nearest pool isn't quite round the corner so it's a morning / afternoon out of the weekend really. I don't work Wednesdays so was going to try and do that while the DC are at school. I bought a bike too and can cycle around 9 miles but not tried recently since this blip.

Can I ask how old your dad was when he had his first replacement? I was just shy of 43 and my consultant said I'd done well to get this far - usually sees people in their 20s... Confused

Nothing to add, but watching this as my own (young) DM may well need one in the near future.

Flowers for you

Oh OP I hope you get this sorted - you can't just carry on experiencing that level of pain. Funny your consultant should say that, someone in my work had one hip done in her twenties and the other early thirties - she also had Perthes as a child.

My son had Congenital Dislocation of the Hip on his right side when he was born, which needed a closed reduction followed by him wearing a plaster cast for nine months. He then had a slipped capital femoral epiphysis on his left sided when he was fourteen. He's been told that he will likely need hip replacements in his thirties/forties. He has two large screws at the top of the left femur and I know they occasionally give him trouble, similar to what you describe. The pain starts in the hip, radiates down his thigh and he can feel it in his knee. He tends to take painkillers and it goes away in a few days though. The weather also affects his hips, which probably means that he has developed arthritis in them - we were warned this would most likely happen.

Hopefully you will get somewhere with the consultant.

He was in his mid thirties if memory serves. The second early forties and first done again mid forties.

It's definately been at least 10 years since the last and hes mid fifties now.

Thanks all for your comments. Apos your poor son, I hope he can last a while before needing surgery.

I had a SPECT CT scan today and seeing my consultant on Tuesday. Typically my hip has been fine since I called them this week. It KNOWS!

Fingers crossed it's gone completely but I doubt it Sad

This sounds horrible, OP, and I'm sorry it's happening to you. It's not at all the experience my brother - who was only 35 when he had a double hip replacement due to early-onset arthritis - has had. He is fine and working in a manual job, plus teaching tae-kwon-do as a hobby, with no issues. Sounds like you definitely need to get it sorted.

Thanks Lord - how fab for your bro! What's weird is that it was great for about a year. Then bam.

Have been doing a silly amount of googling. I have the disc with the images and was going to ask someone at work this afternoon to have a look (lecturer in nursing and there are radiographer lecturers too) but no one was around. Harrumph. I have my suspicions and it would need going in again Angry

About to have a total hip replacement next week after CDH as a child. I'm 38 with two small children. OP have found the Facebook group 'Young Hip Replacements' really helpful with lots of useful info and people posting for advice on follow up pain.

I am possibly a little late to this but is that a S-Ron implant? I have thigh pain issues with my replacement. The stem is a touch long and sitting up against the bone and I get stress distribution pain.

I have reduced it a bit by loosing weight and bulking up the muscles to take the strain off the joint. I am looking at more surgery to sort it out further down the line after having my baby!

I was 41 when I had my hip done, 20 odd months ago. I recommend the facebook groups young hip replacements and UK hippies.
