Positive Mirena Coil experiences - please?!

Hi

I have endometriosis and I'm recovering from a laparoscopy that I had last week to remove an ovarian cyst and endometriosis from behind my cervix. I had a Mirena coil fitted while I was under GA.

The reason my consultant recommended the Mirena is to protect me from the endometriosis growing back. At 46 I'm too old to take the pill, so this is really my only option aside from taking medication which would put me straight into menopause which I definitely don't want.

It's a week today since my operation and although I'm feeling a lot better I'm still in pain, particularly on my left side where most of the work was done.

The downside of being at home all day is that I've had endless opportunities to read horror stories about Mirena and every morning I wake up expecting to have acne/lost half my hair/feel suicidal etc. As I'm still not actually able to stand up straight or do more than hobble I think it is a little early to judge the loss of libido side of things.

At the moment my skin, hair and mood (well aside from the fact that I'm fed up with being in pain) are much the same as usual. Also, aside from a little light bleeding for the first few days after the op (which I was told to expect) I haven't experienced any bleeding. I'm hoping that these are signs that the Mirena might work for me.

I'm hoping that the reason there are so few positive stories about the Mirena is because people rarely take to the internet if they are satisfied with something.

Any good stories out there?

I've had one for years. I'm on my third I think. No periods. No side effects that I've noticed. Don't have acne. Have plenty of hair. Haven't put on weight.

Same here - had a coil for two years and it's been a life-change...It's not for everyone I guess, but works for me. Good luck Smile

I had my first fitted 6 years ago 3 months after having my daughter. Didn't have a period for 5 years until I had it removed last April. Didn't even know the Dr had taken it out until she showed me! No side affects that I can think of. My mum, sister and friend have all had it also and all said it was the best thing they ever did Smile

Had mine for 6 months for hellish periods along with fibroids, I had the odd spot and sore boobs for the first couple of months and random light spotting for 4 months and nothing since.
I'm 47 and wish I'd had one years ago but like you read all the horror stories and put it off until it was give it a go or hysterectomy, my advice would be don't panic if you get spotting or hormonal ups and downs in the first 6 months as they can take a while to settle and for your body to get used to it, so definitely a big positive for me.

On my second one and it's great. I also have/had endometriosis and a fibroid and horrible painful periods.

With my first it took six months to settle down properly. I didn't gain weight, I did have spotting and tender boobs but in comparison to what I had been suffering every 24 days beforehand it was was a walk in the park. After the first six months I had virtually no periods for the next three years. I occasionally get what feels like ovulation pains and javelin arse around what would be the right time of month.

The hormonal feelings kicked in around four years into the first Mirena so I got it out and replaced with an immediate cessation of symptoms. I'm 42 and I hope to get through the menopause with the Mirena.

It's been life changing in that I feel normal and not as if my hormones are ruling my life.

On my second and have had this one in for 8 years with another two to go. No periods and this should see me right through the menopause (am nearly 54).
First one took 6 months to settle down but after that I never looked back.

Another love it - heavy periods to none at all, no weight gain, no moods, no spots (all things that I've had on the pill) so sad it took me so long to find out about mirena coil

I've had one for 4 years now and am very happy with it. Insertion was fine. No periods since the initial irregular bleeding. (Be aware this can last for months, and then just stop as it did for me.) Extremely easy now. Would recommend.

I'm on my second. I chose it due to extremely painful periods (fainting etc) Changed my life.

Yep love mirena here! Much lighter periods, no side effects, literally could forget about it. Only had it out to TTC!

I've had 2 over the past 6 years - I had it for erratic periods and it settled that down pretty well. I had the first one out after the threads disappeared - it had shifted slightly. It was removed and I had the second one in during November 2014.

Unfortunately in May 2106 I started bleeding and although the coil was still there it had stopped doing its job and I've been bleeding since then. Only relief has been Northisterone.

I got fibroids and am now on the waiting list for a hysterectomy. I had no problems with the coil apart from sore boobs.

I'm 4 years into my first - no side effects except absence of periods! Starting to get a bit of a period (not enough for tampax) the last few months so considering going to get the next one fitted early. I love it, it cured my debilitatingly heavy periods (I was housebound for a couple of days a month and was petrified about coming on around my cycle times while out and about). Best contraception I've ever had and completely forget about it even being there.

Life changer for me. Literally the best thing I ever did. I went for bleeding every day for over a year to having a light bleed twice in the 18 months I have had it. The only down side i have noticed is a very slight increase in chin hairs - I had 2 regulars before and now I have about 6/7 but they are simple to pluck and don't bother me. The hormones act locally rather than right through you the way the pill does so shouldn't cause any crazy symptoms. I too read some horror stories but was facing sterilisation and ablation so thought I would give the mirena a go first. Game changer in my bedroom Wink
