Middle-aged ailment of the day - can I slow the development of a bunion?

I think I have a bunion Sad
It's small and knobbly, not swollen, but a bit achy. The aching seems sporadic and not currently dependent on what shoes I'm wearing. At the moment it's mild and nowhere near bad enough to need surgery, but I'm worried it might worsen. Any tips for slowing the progression, other than sensible footwear?

Make sure you wear well fitting shoes, you can buy cushion things at the chemists if it hurts. I don't think there is anything else you can do really. I inherited my bunions, have had one removed as it got ridiculously big and painful. I used to wear a lot of crap shoes which I think made it worse. I'm much more careful now and my remaining bunion seems to be staying manageable for now at least.

I've had both mine removed. I don't think that there is anything you can do apart from wear sensible shoes. I had the first one done when I couldn't cope with the pain of walking on it. I managed to get five years before the other became too painful. It's not a great op, recovery is realistically around 6-8 weeks to be able to walk without a boot or crutches, and 12-18 months for full recovery. One of my ops was more successful than the other...
