I've had a stabbing pain in my head, behind my ear since Monday. I had it before a few months ago but I don't think it lasted this long. It's a sharp nipping kind of pain that sometimes makes me jerk like as if is poking a nerve. On Monday it was happening maybe once an hour or so but it has increased in frequency science then and it's coming in bursts between 10-30 seconds apart then nothing for about 10 minutes then same again. I've been taking paracetamol since Monday but i don't think it's having any effect anymore.

Should add that if I move my head quickly it also nips the same way.

I know the pain you mean. I get it very occasionally and have done for as long as I can remember. Sorry you're getting it frequently, it's horrible. I'd get it checked out if its persisting and increasing.
Not much help with your query but at least can bump it up for you.
No idea what causes it, so will be interested in any feedback you get.

Thanks greycat. It seems to have stopped as of about 1pm this afternoon but I'm going to make an appointment with GP tomorrow to get it checked. I will report back when I do.

I think you are describing the same pain I get at times. I once mentioned it to my GP, and I was told it was stress related. I get it once every so often.

Are you under any stress at the moment?Definitely go to see your GP if you are concerned

I'm

It just started back about half an hour ago. Not as painful or as frequent though.

Not under any stress in particular. DC are off school though

I think a visit to your GP would be a good idea. I'm sure it's nothing to worry about.

Hope you get some relief from the pain soon.

I think I know what you mean. I think mine is linked to my jaw, and is when I am stressed and clench my teeth.

Look up TMJ.

That's the one - I used to hold my phone under my ear at work. I bought a headset, and it's made a huge difference.

Thanks I looked up TMJ but I don't think that's it. The pain is higher up in my head, above and lightly back from my ear. It's been agony this morning. I've taken ibuprofen but no relief. Called GP and there closed today.

Shingles? Do you have a rash? Sounds like a nerve pain/neuralgia - I get this from time to time behind one ear, particularly if the weather is very cold and windy. I have to take ibuprofen which helps but doesn't entirely get rid of it. After about 3 days it wears off. I say shingle because that stabbing pain is similar to the pain I had when I got shingles on my chest area.

No rashes. It's eased off now a bit.

I get something similar, Google 'ice pick headache'. It usually hangs around for a few days with me, intermittent sharp stabbing head pain, and then disappears. It's nothing to worry about apparently, but is v unpleasant..

Thanks Scarlett, I think that's what it is. I've an appointment with GP on Tuesday just to get it checked out. It's still happening. Last night was awful, I was close to tears. Lying down on my right side seems to help. That's the side it's on. Not too bad today. Nothing until about 4pm and and lasted a couple of hours. It's fine so far this evening. For some reason I think it's when I'm sitting down. When I am up and about it doesn't happen.

Yes, it's horrible, and pretty scary to feel such a stabbing pain in your head. I go through phases of getting it, then nothing for months. Let us know what the doctor says.

Is it on the bony bit behind your ear? Any swelling?

Report
ScarlettDarling · 21/02/2017 22:35

How did your gp appointment go op? Hope the pain has settled down a bit?

Report
OneWithTheForce · 21/02/2017 23:14

It has settled somewhat since Sunday. Last night was very painful but only for a couple of hours. pain free so far today. GP has suggested it might be nerve pain and has prescribed me naproxen to take for a week. If this doesn't help things I have to go back in and she will take bloods.

No swelling but my colleague was convinced it felt "spongy". GP had a feel and says it doesn't.
