Alarmed at DS breathing!

For a few weeks now DS (2.5) has had a cold and a stuffy nose. He started snoring and I tried Karvol drops on the pillow and now use Karvol rub on his chest. His cold has all but gone, but he is still having trouble breathing when asleep through his nose.


All I can describe it as is akin to sleep apnoea. He falls asleep, his back passages seem to collapse and he can't breathe through them so he jolts, wakes up and the cycle begins again. I've taken him to the doctors and he said it wasn't sleep apnoea as only fat middle-aged men get that. I'm getting a bit jumpy though as I know episodes like this can precede SIDS.

Sorry if that sounds alarming, I just don't know what to do. Should I go back to the doctor?? What should I say to him without soundimg like a paranoid harpy?

Can you ask for a referral to the ENT dept at the hospital. And until then keep the monitor glued to your ear at night.

MY DS (11wks) is like this because he has a floppy larynx so colds stick around forever! I get saline drops to wash his nasal passages when he's really bad.

Looks like he's been cursed with ginormous tonsils and problem adenoids like me, which the doc gracefully conceaded could cause apnoea, though he hadn't heard of it before. Have a referral to ENT, probably to get both whipped out before they cause any more problems.

I second Misdee that not only middle aged people get it, my DS (3.5 at the time) has been checked for it ( by using a monitor on his finger overnight). Not much in the way of practical advice, but hope you get it tested/sorted soon.

DD2 was diagnosed with sleep apnoea 18 months ago. She snored like a trooper from birth. It wasn't until she was admitted to hospital for something else ENT related and the doctor heard her snoring (he thought it was me through the curtain) that they realised how bad it was.

Last summer she had tonsils and adenoids out and she now sleeps like a baby! Her school work has improved massively and she's never off sick now as opposed to being off 50% of the time due to being tired and run down and getting tonsilitis all the time.
