Menstrual cycle gone all weird!

Songbird · 28/02/2007 13:55

Normally my cycle is like clockwork, 28 days to the day. However my last two periods have been 21 and 20 days, and I'm feeling periodic now, which is only 17 days - what the frick is going on? Dd is 2 next month, and my cycle has been settled for ages, so it's not that. I'm purdy sure I'm not preggers. The only weird thing recently has been a nasty bout of flu, but that coincided with the 2nd errant period and wouldn't explain the first one. Help! This is most peculiar for me.

Oh, and does anyone else think there should be more topics within 'Health'?!

How old are you?

This has happened to me twice for different reasons - once when I was mid 20's then again early 40's

could you be stressed about anything? that can muck up your system - I guess illness would count too?

I'm 30 and pretty stressed about money stuff at the mo, but I try not to be too down-hearted. To be honest dh is far more bleak about our situation and I do sometimes find myself quite exhausted and upset by how stressed he is all the time. It's picked up a bit more recently and he's a bit more chipper at the mo, but I find it hard work.

I'm not surprised you find it hard - could be stress mucking your cycle up. It has done the opposite to mine - only get a period every few months and it lasts sometimes for weeks!

Blimey, why couldn't I have gone that way?! I don't know why but I hadn't considered stress. I'm really emotional at the moment as well, and find myself crying at really soppy and happy stuff (more than sad things bizarrely!). Thanks, as dh and I say to one another when we get a bit down, I'll just have to 'sort myself out'! (like it's that easy being the running joke!)

My periods were irregular in my 20's due to hormonal imbalance - there was nothing physically wrong. Up until then they'd been spot on 28 days for years.

After having children they went back to normal, but then went peculiar again which was due to uterine polyps.

is fine to be that way if you not trying to get pg - pain if you are! apparently the stress gland is just above the gland which controls all your period/ovulation hormones (pituitary gland I think?)

Good brain design! Thanks 40+, what are uterine polyps?

Basically they are benign tumours - in my case I saw a photo of them and they looked like pink & yellow pouffes!

They were removed with a laser - had to be done under GA but didn't hurt at all.

hehe! that's why I'm not a doctor! is it the pituitary that produces the stress hormones then?

Did they cause any pain at all, especially when on your period? Because I've been getting very sore recently, quite different to my usual cramps. I always get really bad achey low-down pains, but recently the pains are higher up, usually on the left side and more stabby rather than achey (I've a way with words, can you tell?). I have been wondering about going to the docs but I don't have great track record of doctors helping me at all!

Slight discomfort rather than pain and quite low down. One explanation for my symptoms could have been an ovarian problem - I was sent for a scan that eliminated that possibility.

I think it's probably very important to get yourself checked out quickly - in the extremely unlikely event that you had an ovarian tumour it's essential to catch it early.

My brother had pain on the left side that turned out to be a low grade kidney infection.

Best not take chances - take yourself off to your GP

If you worried about your cycle at all then the docs can do blood tests to check all your hormone levels are okay - if they even a bit out then that could affect you x

Another possibility that was mentioned for me was underactive thyroid - again it was ruled out after blood test.

Yikes! Thanks ladies, I've gone from having to turn my frown upside down to going to the doctors toot sweet! No really, that's fab advice, just what I was after. I will go to the docs, although I'll have to wait for the nice lady one!

oooh, you so lucky - i only have male docs - so embarrassing to talk to them about some things! Def worth a pop to the docs if you worried

Best thing imo. Both times it's happened to me I've left it far too long and then felt really stupid that it was something quite simple to sort out
