I never found cough mixtures effective with children. For a persistent cough I do 2 things: offer water (in a bottle or anywayup cup so it doesn't get spilt) and try to prop child up in the bed so almost in sitting position, using lots of pillows. This may stop the coughing long enough to let the child fall asleep. Will probably end up horizontal again before long. Poor dd! Hope anti bs kick in soon.

Nothing really works but propping them up a bit in bed does help - put extra pillows or blankets under the mattress so that it's not flat. Also some karvol on a facecloth near the bed or over the radiator helps a bit too.

Or you could prop bed up at top on bricks. Is the room very dry, that might be the problem.

Honey and lemon as a drink may help

Dickensian Something or other from Holland and Barrett - truely brilliant - non alcoholic and all natural. It still works if you dilute or add to something else.

I suffer from a persistant night-time cough every time I get a cold. Hot lemon is brilliant - better than Benylin I find! I use the juice of a whole lemon as I don't mind it sour, but it might be a bit unpalatable for your dd so you could put some honey in as well.

You can also try Nelson's Sootha- honey plus homeopathic bryonia.
