Had root canal weds and now in agony.. how long should it take to heal

So.. this week I had to have a filling replaced. The dentist did an Xray and said the decay was under the filling and on the nerve so I needed to have a root canal done. My tooth hadn't been painful at all so I was surprised when he said I needed it done, but I trusted him and it was done.

It's now 4 days later and my tooth is agony. I can't eat that side of my mouth still and if I touch it / close my mouth or put pressure on my tooth i want to cry, it's like a shock running though me.

How long does this pain go on for or should I try and get an emergency appointment today ? Paracetamol and ibuprofen just aren't touching the pain. I've had a root canal years ago but can't remember this pain previously..

Anyone can advise or suggest what can help ease it?
I'm so annoyed it could have been done after Christmas as it wasn't painful at all and I'd have been able to eat my Christmas dinner pain free

Get an appointment today. If it's infected you'll struggle to see anyone over the next couple of days and you need anti biotics now.

Clove oil applied to the gum tastes gross but temporarily releases the pain. (whiskey does too!)

Thankyou PberrtT. I have eventually got through to dentist and they've got me an emergency appointment this afternoon.
I could cry. I know people are in much worse situations but I'm so upset about it and in pain :(

sounds like youve got dry socket. You need to see someone urgently

Funnily enough branleuse that's how it felt!
When I got the emergency appointment I told them it felt similar to when I had dry rot last time...
after I put phone down I realised what I'd said!!
I have now managed to squeeze in 3 antibiotics today and have co codamol. Have slept on settee this evening so hoping they will kick in and I can eat our dinner tomorrow :)
