Dentists..whats the best treatment to stop bruxism?

Have heard botox can stop it?
Or is mouthguard only treatment ?

ive been referred to maxilofacial to check its not arthritis in my jaw as i have no wearing down of my teeth but dentist did say if all tests came back clear i would need a custom made mouthguard - i think she said it would cost approx £180 on nhs , she didnt mention botox.

Mouth guards can limit damage but won't stop the habit. Can make it worse as act as "exercisers". Botox can relax muscles to temporarily reduce bruxing and symptoms. Sedatives occasionally used over night in sever cases. CBT or other non - pharmacological therapies to break the cause / effect cycle.

I wa concerned that I was grinding but this morning my dentist said my teeth aren't ground down much.
I thought it may be the reason for another abscess I have at the moment ,but it's a failed root canal treatment

It depends why it's happening. All my splints (mouthguards) were free when the hospital made them. A good hard splint correctly fitted shouldn't make it worse. Some people get soft ones, that may well make it worse. Low dose amitriptyline can help.

Botox works well though. There's loads of things they'll probably want you to try first and it only works for a few months.
