cervical bleeding - anyone know the possible causes?

hi
for a while now after having sex i have noticed bleeding - i was due a smear anyway.
I have also had some dull aches and pains, but have put that down to some stomach problems and surgery on stomach causing changes to my digestive system a bit....ive also had some irregular periods for the first time ever but at 42 i think that could be my age or hormone related

ive been for my routine smear test and told the nurse, who confirmed as soon as she touched the cervix it began to bleed.

im not feeling panicky or anything, but she did say it was a bit unusual. I will wait for the results and then book in to see a gp - i was going to this anyway. There was no visible erosion or anything.

am i likely to need further investigation for this?

she explained that if the results come back with changes then i will be tested for the HPV virus and the results will determine the recall etc.

Im just wondering if this sounds routine or whether the bleeding is suspicious really.

ive no idea what the causes of bleeding can be and im refusing to google!

Hi there, well it sounds a little like a cervical ectropian. These are non threatening growths from your cervix which bleed if bumped (hence after or during sex). I have had two, one the size of a plum which was 'burnt off' with liquid nitrogen (big ouch) and a second which didn't get so big and which disappeared in time once I came off the pill. Oestrogen is one of the contributing factors, hence the pill being a problem with me. The mirena coil and hormonal implant or injection which may also contain oestrogen will also affect it, if this is it. Ectropians are very easy to see with a speculum exam and really easy to clear, but agree that the mess during sex is quite off putting. Get it checked out anyhow and I am sure it is nothing sinister. thanks, i confess i am a tad worried.

im not on the pill. I have had ectropians before but the nurse said she could see none this time. (ive had smear test today and she examined me with speculum) She said the cervical opening was very tight and the cervix bled quite badly when touched - she left me legs akimbo while it settled down.....lovely!

she suggested waiting for the smear to come back and then book in to see the gp.

i suppose im just mildly concerned because of the abdominal pain, the bleeding and ive just had a read on patient.co.uk that the HPV virus can also be responsible for warts and verrucas.....(as well as cancer)

last year i had 28 verrucas - one got so bad, and so big, that i could not walk. I saw a podiatrist who said he had only ever seen them that bad in cancer patients. I had them for years, but then they just got wildly out of control. I took time off work and they went.

i found the beginnings of another last week and blasted the fucker with bazuka gel....

so. i really am not hugely panicked but am a little concerned.

Oh dear, no wonder you are worried! I know how stressful unexplained and a bit sinister things can be. I was told I had skin cancer just before Christmas (also 34 weeks pregnant) and had to have a small op on my eyelid where the lesion was, then wait for biopsy results. Thankfully all clear but I just knew- it would be cancer.

Could your bleeding be related to the verrucas? If HPV, is it easy to treat / treatable?

Also, if you are into hippy / alternative medicine, I would recommend the Rapha centre in Perthshire, Scotland. You send in a hair sample and they look at a cellular level at what is going on on your body and give you a full picture. It sounds kooky but whilst you are waiting on the gp and smear results it may shed some light and also make you feel you are taking control and doing something about it yourself. thanks - how can your hair show what is happening on a cellular level somewhere else in your body? im a little sceptical and would assume it costs....

Hi, I am 43 and I have been having ongoing gyny issues. I had a ectropian cauterized last year and have started having issues again so I went to my GP again today and my cervix looked fine and it did not bleed when touched. She took a swab and did an internal she said I would have pain if it was an infection. This struck a cord with me as regards your post as you mention stomach pains. Is it possible that you have an infection? I think it might be worth going back to your GP before the smear test results so that they can have another look, especially as you are concerned about it. I diagnosed myself with terminal cancer thanks to Dr Google and I suffer with HA. I find that worrying is a waste of my time and a visit to the GP is always helpful.
