Cervical Polyp - shitting myself

Workitbabe · 10/02/2014 21:31

Title says it all really. Went to the sexual health clinic for a couple of sti tests this evening and she found a polyp on my cervix - about the size of her little finger nail. I have had some abdo pain and bleeding after sex.

She wants me to return in 2 weeks, as wants the doctor to take a look. She says the cervix looks healthy but I am now scared shitless. Due a smear next month too which I have booked.

So people can you help me out?

  • Can these be cancerous?
  • What happens next?
  • Do they remove them?
  • How do they remove them?
  • What's the recovery time?

Really so scared and keep crying!

Thanks all. x

That's a bit weird, I just came back from a scan today (abdo) & she said that I have a polyp and that its nothing to worry about. I think her words were 'it's just like a flap of skin'. That's what'll be causing the bleeding, so they are a nuisance but completely harmless Confused

Hope that reassures you a bit

I don't think polyp's are cancerous, im not even sure if they are pre-cancerous, so the important thing is you get them treated and you get that smear test. The bleeding after sex could be cervical erosion which is fine and nothing to worry about. However very rarely bleeding after sex could be related to cervical cancer which is why they want to do a smear.

When was your last smear? and if your about to say that you've never had one or it was 5 years ago then don't wait until next month go and get it done tomorrow.

I think polyps are mostly harmless- however they probably want to be absolutely sure its just a polyp/cyst and nothing nastier. Hopefully it will be harmless and no action needed.

I had two polyps removed last year, had another scan last week and I have two more one in the womb and one on the cervix, the consultant isn't worried and she said they tend to come back when removed anyway. So leaving alone.

Thanks all.

I had a smear 3 years ago so as soon as I had the reminder letter that it was due I booked it.

She said it was alike a flap of skin and I have googled and put my mind at rest a bit. Still keep worrying though.

Do they always remove them?

What's it like?

Thanks ladies. I love Mumsnet. x

You're up to date on your smear then, that's good, and after all she said your cervix looked healthy, I honestly think you have nothing to worry about.

The person I saw yesterday didn't mention anything about removing mine so I just assumed they'd leave it. Anyway I have to book a follow up with the gp just to discuss the result.

Thanks again. Still scared. It seems such a gap doesn't it 3 years from smear to smear. I just hope nothing has developed :(

Last month was the first time I had in-between bleeding so I am hoping all is ok. Appointment not until 24th Feb as we are away next week.

Trying to put it to the back of my mind.

Just to add that they are very very very rarely cancerous. I had a uterine polyp and it was responsible for my infertility, it was the size of my womb and I was miscarrying a lot because the egg couldn't embed itself in my womb, no room....

I had it removed via a hystoscropy.

Cervical polyps are almost invariably benign, and it is a simple quick outpatient procedure to remove them.

Oh, I had in between bleeding for years before it was discovered. Originally, the cause of the bleeding was thought to be hormonal. I bleed irregularly for about three/four years. It was annoying. I used to run a lot and I would spot heavily then.

Thanks again ladies.

TMI but I had sex last night and no bleeding which was a relief.

Having a bit of pain though just in lower left abdo. Think half of it is to do with stress!

It was discovered I had one when I had a bleed at 18 weeks pregnant. It didn't cause problems and there was no mention of it at a later smear so I'm guessing it went away.
