Is this normal nearly 2 years after a broken ankle?

I broke my ankle nearly 2 years ago, no surgery needed -I was put in plaster, they removed it 4 weeks later and waved me off (no follow up x-ray/physio), I slowly rebuilt strength and all seems ok other than 2 things:

-every now and again I get really severe cramp right in the ankle joint (not somewhere I've ever had cramp before). Usually happens in the night if I stretch when turning over.

  • also every now and again I get weird bruise-like marks over the ankle (lots of little bruise marks rather than one big bruise IYSWIM)

Is this normal?

Have you got any pins/metal in there? I broke mine about 3 years ago and it still swells up and looks thicker than the other but not the bruises or cramp, though it is stiffer

Just seen you didn't have surgery so no metalwork, mention it to your GP next time your there?

I get the cramp (20 years after the event) but not the bruises.

I had metalwork in mine which I then got removed and I do get twinges and sharp pains sometimes. I broke it over 3 years ago.

And I now believe the old wives tale about feeling the weather in my bones!!

No harm in going to have it checked out.

I broke mine almost 2 years ago. I get the cramp but not the bruising. Mins is still puffy and swollen though and tender to touch in places.

Get it checked out, mine turned out to be related to vitamin D deficiency.

I don't really get pain, other than the cramp which is the sort that has me writhing around in agony.

Its just so weird that its right there in the ankle where I'd never experienced cramp before.

Thanks for your responses. I'll try and remember to maybe mention it next time I'm at the docs.

BestisWest - aah now that's interesting about the Vit D deficiency as I was diagnosed as having osteopenia (precursor to osteoporosis) after the break and I take calcium and Vit D tablets.

However I do have phases of forgetting to take them so I'm wondering if the cramp tends to happen when I'm going through a forgetful stage.

Ah could well be. I have osteopenia too (dexa scan after the break). I find a banana a day helps with cramp.

Do they check your calcium and vit D levels regularly?

Mine was discovered in the same way only they didn't routinely scan me, I had to ask. A friend who knows about these things said that because I broke my ankle after a trivial slip and there was osteoporosis in the family then I should ask for one. Glad I did as otherwise I wouldn't have been aware.

I've not had my calcium or vit D levels checked at all.

I think I'm due to have a Dexa scan every 3 years so the next one will be next year.

I still get cramp and bruising and swelling 21 years later.

Shock 21 years later!?

Have you ever been told that its ok/normal for this to happen Lonecat?

I get a weird cramp thing in mine (I fell down stairs, landed on it and displaced open fracture and torn ligaments)
Cramp only happens oddly when I run upstairs and is a moment of "ow fuck ow" then gone Grin
Also get stiffness and cracking in them (I broke the other ankle a year later)

I didn't break mine - I tore all my ligaments though...and I get pain in it occasionally still 16 years later.
