I recently went for a scan and was told I have a bulging disc in my lower spine. Does anyone have experience of this? Any info and advice much appreciated.

Yes I have a protruding disc in lower spine too, think that is the same as bulging , v v painful !!! when it was acute pain I needed strong pain killers and saw a physio, he was great now I swim twice a week and it really helps. Also try to do gentle yoga when I can as the gentle stretching to the spine helps, obviously when it is in the acute severe pain phase I can hardly move then take it easy /pain killers and slowly it will improve. Once it settles a bit try gentle physio and then move on to swimming. My physio was from Australia and he says that is the advice they give in Aus to swim at least twice a week, back stroke is best as again it stretches spine allowing bulging disc to go back in to the place its meant to be! Hope this helps because it is agony and Gp's are not always good with back pain mine said it was just muscular! and to go swimming that was on a day I couldn't make it to the surgery it was so bad I couldn't dress myself never mind go swimming! when I told the physio he couldn"t believe it and said he would let her know it was a disc problem not just muscular Hope it settles soon

Hi, I had a 'disc bulge' in my lower back about 3 years ago. I could not sit up straight, and from driving to just sitting on the sofa, I was always leaning to one side as it was so painful. I lived with it for around 9 months before I went to my GP with it, and even when I did, he just told me I was overweight and that was why..... I then moved back home with my parents, registered with my old GP near there and got a better seeing to! He had a prod and poke, gave me some painkillers and reffered me to have a MRI scan. After that, I was diagnosed with a bulging disc and had a few sessions with a physio, and it was gone!
I do think that my bed at the time the pain started had a lot to do with it. I was living with someone and we slept on a futon bed - so it was a thin, quite bumpy pillow baisically - but as soon as I moved back on with my parents and was sleeping in a proper bed, it started to get better.
So I don't know what your bed is like, but that could be something that may be affecting you? Otherwise, I aggre with awaynboilyurheid, swimming is great!
Hope it gets better soon x
