Broken big toe?

Last night had ridiculous accident - I was taking recycling out to bin, tripped on front door step, dropped box, flew over box and landed on the drive. My first thought on landing was "thank goodness I haven't broken my wrist" as I put my arm out to land. Stood up and then realised big toe really hurt.

I went all teeth chattery and shaky for 10 minutes. Toe had swollen up a bit and it hurt like hell for several hours. Today I can't bend it or put weight on it. Only very light bruising, still swollen. I went to a&e once for little toe - said it was broken and nothing they could do.

Luckily dh is around today. Do I just rest it? If it is broken how long will it take to mend? It could just be badly banged and in shock couldn't it? If it was broken would there be loads of bruising as well as swelling. Rather tricky to walk as I can't put any weight on it.

I broke my big toe when I was 11 yrs old. I physically couldn't bed the thing at all. Hardly any swelling at all and only bit brusied. They had to pin mine.

Oh. I can't bend it. I try to tell it to move, but nothing happens. Bruising coming out a bit now. Great way to start half term Angry

Yep that's exactly what happened with my toe was trying to bend it physically could not. Had one op to try and repair the badly crushed bone that didn't work and a second op to pin it. They can't leave a broken big toe as you need it for balance. Go tell your walk in centre or gp that its painful and that you actually can't bend it. Good luck

Haven't made it yet - complicated day yesterday! Only bruised slightly and swelling is not huge, but noticeable when next to other foot.

I am reluctant to go as ds2 injured his ankle a few weeks ago. First doc put it in a cast and when we went back the second doc was horrible. Got the cast off and started yanking ds1's foot all over the place. Told him nothing was broken (there had been doubt the week before) and he had to walk on it and it would hurt! So I'm scared they are going to yank it around.

I did too much yesterday and my foot was throbbing and achey by end of day. My plan of action is to buy some crutches from Amazon (Prime delivery will arrive tomorrow) and rest it as much as possible. With 4 dc I'm sure the crutches will come in useful again Wink

My toe looks straight and most of the bruising is at the base of the toe - next to it's neighbouring toe - and round the back at the base.

Aww your poor ds!! My toe was straight as well. Give it a few days but if you still can't bend it then you will prob have to go as it may compromise circulation

Thanks for help Moleskin. I am now regretting not going to a&e a week ago. - dh was off and dc at school, so would have been perfect.

Swelling has mostly gone down & a lot of bruising gone. I can walk on it in an odd way - I am not really putting that much weight on it - however I then get pain later in the day. Decided I will go to gp next week if no better.

Still can't make my toes bend! I stare at them hard, trying, but they only twitch! My problem now is that I don't know whether to use it & put up with pain or not use it.

Why didn't I listen to everyone last week Blush

I can empathise. I've torn the ligaments in my foot and been housebound for over a week now. Take ibuprofen four times a day to reduce swelling for a week and keep foot elevated.

My sympathies I feel your pain.

Oh no giglet - sorry about your ligaments. I am not a good patient & feel bad asking dh for help all the time. Can't believe I feel so incapacitated because of a toe!

Hope you feel better soon.
