Period pains and periods returning after bf'ing

Hi folks, any experience of bad period pain after having babies?

I bf DS for 11 months (mixed feeding from 6 months) and by the end I was only feeding him once a day. Even so, periods only returned 12 days after I finished bf'ing. It seemed like a normal, 5 day period. But now, 2 weeks later, I'm in quite serious pain- could this be ovulation pain? Or another period already? I've heard that sometimes periods come back heavier after babies.

Before DD (now 4), I was on the pill, so periods were standard 5 days, on 28 day cycle. I went onto mini pill v soon after having DD but now just using condoms.

Could this just be how periods are, without the input of the pill/mini pill? Other than TTC (or pregnancy), I've been on the pill for 17 years, so I wonder if I'm just a bit blissfully ignorant.
