I'm a bit scared. I went for a fasting blood test on Tuesday and my blood sugar was 11.6
I now have to go for a glucose tolerance test next Friday.
How likely is it that I am diabetic.

I will let you know. Thanks. I've bookmarked the site just in case I need it. How life changing is a diagnosis?

Well I went today and they took blood and gave me the drink then half an hour later decided to abandon the test because my other blood test result was so high they have said I am def diabetic. I'm seeing the diabetic nurse on 30th. Will feel better after I have seen her I think. I'm going to sign up to the forum you suggested. Thanks for your support.

I would insist that they complete the glucose tolerance test. I had a fasting test which was 11.5 and then the glucose tolerance test a couple of weeks later. The results from that showed that not only am i not diabetic but i'm not even in the pre-diabetic stage anymore.

I'm 37.
Maybe I better go back and ask them.to do another test.

hi.. not a diabetes expert but would think that the GTT should have been completed.
Did you get todays blood sugar result ?

Thanks footie I have registered on DSF today.
Blether I won't get that result until Monday.
I did think it weird that they cancelled the test part way through. Will post on DSF tomorrow.

My dad was diagnosed with a fasting value of just under 20.
All the doctor gave him was 2 weeks' worth of Metformin and an eventual appointment with the diabetic nurse.
Good luck BBT. Hope that you get the help that you need.

DP is type 2 diabetic, he sees specialist diabetic doctor (not GP) every 3 months. Is that not standard? When first diagnosed about 9 months ago we both went to a group session with diabetic nurse and dietician, attending that meant we then went to one to one session with the dietician and then after that DP had a follow up group session with the nurse.

I hope you get decent care BBT, DP was very down at first diagnose, aged 37 like you, but he is controlling it really well with weight loss, diet and metformin.

I do feel a bit down about it made worse because I only have myself to blame. I've been overweight and unfit for the last 7 years and should have sorted myself out sooner. I've eaten rubbish and not exercised. This is a big wake up call.for me :(

DP has just walked as exercise BBT, start off with that. Ask your GP for a dietician appointment and follow the advice you get on the boards Footie recommends. Don't blame what has gone before because you can't change that, just try to do all you can for the future.

Ours didn't. Half a plate of veg, quarter of a plate of protein and quarter of a plate of carbs, preferably complex carbs eg wholewheat pasta, pots in skins, granary bread etc. If healthy weight then split 1/3, 1/3, 1/3.

It seems the NHS diabetic care is very very patchy :(
