Teenage DD's 'bits' look weird. What can it be?

DD is 14 and came to me last night complaining that it hurts to walk as she has an ache 'down below'. After much cajoling, I got her to let me look and her whole genital region looks massively swollen - almost cartoonish. Her clitoris and labia 'lips' are massive and it just looks weird! It is not bruised, just massive, and she assures me nothing untoward has happened to her.

What could this be combined with the pain?

I have googled only for loads of disgusting web sites to come up.

I am taking her to GP tonight (if I can get her there) but there are no women GPs available only male and she has said she will not let a male GP look at her. Another option is to take her to our 'walk in' centre and get a female nurse to look at her.

Also posted in general health.

I can imagine you are both a bit worried?! Try not to be, Sounds like it could be something simple like vaginitis, the most common cause of this would be a yeast infection such as thrush.

I hope ur GP manages to help.

I'm not a GP or any kind of doctor but my first thought would be an allergic reaction, if it is swollen and red.

I need to take her to see the nurse or doctor to get it sorted.

If it itches then it could be fungle infection.

Hope you get it sorted soon.

I used to get this something similar when I was pregnant, cold water will help reduce the swelling, (the -pain-- uncomfortable feeling comes with the swelling.)
Can't remember exactly what dr said it was now, (was 3 yrs ago) think it may possibly be thrush related.

Pahhhh, really feel for you.
Remember about 8 yrs ago DH and I had gone out to buy a car, only to get a phone call from DS 2 to say DS1 was unwell and in agony.
We got home (midday) to find DS1(15) in agony prepared to show both of us
Blush his swollen red testicles.
Think the upshot of it all was that he had been wearing underpants that had become to tight (naughty mum) and had ended up with a severe case of dobies itch (according to DH).
Anyway, just wanted to say that although it was a surprise that day to see parts of our sons anatomy we thought we may never see again, that he totally trusted us as your DD did to help them, even though it may have been embarrassing all round.

I'm thinking maybe an allergic reaction too - have you changed wash powder, bought new sanitary towels, etc?

On the other hand, has she started her period? A lot of people get really engorged around period time - perhaps a link?

If there's a chance of thrush etc, natural yoghurt is wonderfully cooling and may offer her some relief.

i had this a while ago! but it disappeared before i got brave enough to get myself seen by anyone

it started with me having thrush. i treated with canesten and then it got all painful and swollen. stopped using the canesten and it went away.
no idea what it was though,

this is possibly the most unhelpful thread ever!
i would try natural thrush treatments though, and ring your GP for an appointment

You can make an ice pack with some frozen peas in a freezer bag, wrapped in a soft cloth of small towel.

Also try taking an antihistamine and see if that helps.

It is possible to be allergic to some sanitary products/bath products/laundry products - you might be able to work out what.

I would say thrush. I had it really badly once when pregnant, and it was exactly as you describe.... Not so much itchy or dischargey, just very swollen and sore as hell.

Get some canesten duo stuff.

Poor Dd!

Sorry to hear that your DD is in pain, but she really showed you? Hmm

why wouldn't she show her??

she is a child, in pain... ?

Report
Pahhhh · 22/07/2011 23:09

Yes TheHerder she showed me. Luckily we are a family who walk naked around the house on occasion so the DCs all know we ALL have genitals and don't have hangups about it Wink. Although I do think she took a bit of cajoling because she knew I would be shocked as apparently she had waxed herself and has a baldie (I was)!

Well we are thinking it's thrush. She has put on some Canestan and it feels better. I was going to to take her to the walk-in centre but she decided to stay out with her friends after school until 6pm so we will wait for the appointment I managed to get with a female GP on Monday just to check her over.

One thing I am thinking though is that she completely waxed herself down there (quite a shock) as she was trying to do a Brazilian which went wrong, so maybe an allergic reaction to the strips? Can't imagine what the GP will think! I had been reading about 'enlarged labias' and was getting a bit worried for her.

Thanks all!

i hope she feels better soon and that it is "just" thrush.
i know when it happened to me it felt really awful for a few days. definitely putting something cool against it helped, so maybe suggest tht to her if it's uncomfortable over the weekend

Report
FannyFifer · 22/07/2011 23:17

I would guess the waxing was the culprit.
A bath with bicarbonate of soda in it will also cool it down and help with the itch.

Report
HazeltheMcWitch · 22/07/2011 23:21

Was it strip wax or hot wax? Could she have burnt herself? Or bruised herself if she's been a bit heavy handed?

Was the waxing very recent, can you establish this may have caused it?

Report
TheHerder · 22/07/2011 23:21

So you didn't put two and two together when you could see she has given herself an all over wax, and wonder whether that might have been the cause?

Or mention it in your OP?

Hmm

Report
beanlet · 22/07/2011 23:25

Almost certainly the waxing. (DH is medical - there's an appalling case in the recent literature of a woman who got necrotising fascitis in that region due to a Brazilian wax...shudder)

Report
RitaMorgan · 22/07/2011 23:27

Either thrush or a reaction to the wax I should think.

What is your problem TheHerder?

Report
TheHerder · 22/07/2011 23:30

No problem, RitaMorgan.

Just very interesting that the OP only has 10 posts, over the last two days.

And 5 of those are about her DD's genitals.

TheHerder I am a regular but have name changed due to the sensitive nature of this thread obviously. I did not think about DD waxing herself till afterwards as the problem was lower down than the hairy bits (or non hairy) iykwim.

Don't know wtf you are trying to insinuate - maybe I'm a fat, hairy, trucker with an obsession about teenage girls swollen vaginas or maybe you are a prat?

If that's what you want to read, then fine.

It's interesting that you name changed last night for this thread, but have posted it tonight.

And then posted under this name on a couple of other threads. Yesterday. When you say you name changed for this thread.

Nonsensical really.
