General health

It is just trapped wind or something benign, isn't it.

I have been having funny feeling heartbeats for a couple of days now, I have had them before but only fleetingly. It kind of feels like my heart is missing a beat then going all odd to try and make up for it. This is the only way I can describe it. I have had it on and off for a couple of days.

Today I have also started with chest pains on the right hand side of my chest, my right arm aches, but is not painful just slightly uncomfortable. The pain has gotten worst in the last hour and has now spread to across the middle of my back (approx where my bra is) The pain is a stabbing pain but there pretty constantly. It is there on resting and when I am active.

I am NOT finding it difficult to breath or move and I am not sweating, my mouth is dry though.

It could be trapped wind couldn't it, I have been quite windy Blush lately.
It hurts I am going to go and take some codeine and paracetamol to see if they help.

I think I am just looking for reassurance to be honest.

You need to seek medical help, it's best to err on the side of caution. Ring NHS direct or out of hours GP.

I don't think anyone can really reassure you that you're not having a heart attack, BUT that skipping heartbeat thingy is usually benign afaik. I have it, it got really bad after pg, then calmed down a lot. I think you're supposed to worry if you have 3 or more in a row iyswim, but don't quote me on that.

Could the pain be muscular or anxiety?

ursula you didn't scare me Smile Thank you I think I will ring NHS direct, see what they say.

winny it could be anxiety, I do have severe anxiety and am seeing a mental health professional to deal with it and am doing some CBT which has had me very anxious just recently. Although I have been feeling better than I thought I would with it (3rd week of active cbt so far) but maybe it is maifesting itself differently to how it normally does. She did say that my anxiety would probably get worse before it got better.

Oh and the 'funny heartbeats' thing has happened several times in a row, several times each day for the last 2 days Sad

Heartbeat going mad is (I think) tachycardia which is a scary sounding term for just that, heartbeat madness. It can be caused by all sorts and not necessarily something terrible but best to check. As it's gone one for several days, try to make a Dr appointment tomorrow morning. Don't worry.

ooh also I think some meds can cause it, I seem to remember it being a side effect when I was on citalopram? But see your GP!

Thanks Smile I came off citalopram about 18 months ago now. I will ring my Dr's tomorrow to see if I can get an appointment.

I am making myself more anxious now. Going to take myself off to bed and chill out I think, well at least I am going to try to.

Thank you all xx

2littlegreenmonkeys - I would be very interested to see what your doctor says. I get the same symptoms !!!!

In my case it started a few months ago, and I saw a GP who could not explain it and I am actually going back tomorrow.

I get the "funny heartbeats" - sometimes once a day, sometimes two or three times a day. It's very unpleasant.

I also get pains in my arm (in my case my left arm) and in my chest and sometimes back, but have been told by my doctor that he does not think it's my heart... I do get trapped wind and acid reflux.

Ursula- tachycardia is a fast hearbeat and can be very dangerous iirc. The skipping heratbeat is something else, forgot the name, but it's pretty common. Ventrical something or other Hmm

OP- a thing that can help is coughing when you get them- don't know why it works, but it seems to reset the heartbeat. Worth a try.

'Patients with frequent premature ventricular contractions such as bigeminy (every other heartbeat is a premature ventricular contraction), couplets (two consecutive premature ventricular contractions), or triplets (three consecutive premature ventricular contractions) often report no symptoms. But in rare occasions they may report weakness, dizziness, or fainting. This is because frequent premature ventricular contractions can diminish the ability of the heart to pump blood to the other organs (diminished cardiac output), resulting in low blood pressure.

Patients with three or more consecutive premature ventricular contractions in a row have ventricular tachycardia. Ventricular tachycardia that is prolonged can result in low cardiac output, low blood pressure, and fainting (syncope). Ventricular tachycardia can also develop into ventricular fibrillation, which is a fatal heart rhythm (see below).'

So it would seem that if you're having three or more skipped beats in a row it's not so good- trip to a doctor for you!

Thank you everyone, I have just made an appointment, they have managed to get me in tomorrow morning. I am feeling much better today, still sore but no 'active' pain as such and no more funny heartbeats (not yet)

winny I noticed in the link you posted, about the mitral valve prolapse, I was born with a slightly enlarged heart and leaking mitral valve, but not sure leaking equates to prolapse as I cant remember my cardiologist ever saying prolapse, but saying leaking. Then again I do have a terrible memory and am hard of hearing so don't always hear correctly.

Also I notice wine/alcohol can make it worse so no more wine or alcohol for me and I have already cut my coffee down to 2 cups a day. My CBT counselor said that caffeine can give the same physical feelings as anxiety does.

I was at the doctors quite some time this morning, the Dr asked the nurse to take some (about 5 vials) of blood for various things and to do an EGC. The EGC was fine, as they usually are when I have had them previous. My blood pressure was in the normal range and they will contact me if they need to WRT to the blood results.

The Dr made me another appointment for a week on Friday for me.

Thank you everyone for helping me Smile
