Geeky stuff

Is there such a thing as a very small and portable scanner on the market?

Not sure whether to post here or in Products.

I'm thinking of something that could be taken on the road with a laptop and used for scanning old photos (6x4 or smaller).

Does such a thing exist? And if so, does it cost the same as a small car?

You can get such things - google for "mobile photo scanner". Prices are in the £200 region I think, although it would be worth garnering opinion from people who own/use them (I don't) before purchase. HP, Epson and Canon are the big names in scanners.

Most mobile scanners grab onto the photo and pull it past the scanner head (like a printer pulls the paper past the print head) - this may damage very old and fragile photos. A flatbed scanner will keep the photo still and move the scan head past it which avoids the risk of damage, but they're physically bigger.
