iPod questions

Ages ago my DP found an iPod in a supermarket-handed it in and eventually months later they contacted him to say it had not been claimed did he want it. He did.
We gave it to our DD1 and she listened to what was on it for a while. Some songs began to degrade-get strange noises on them, background noise, voices and 'burble'.
We tried rechrging-no difference.
We have now worked out how to reset it and have put different music on but it is now doing the same.
So:
Has she dropped it and it has an internal fault that could be causing this?

Is it a problem with the download of individual songs-should I report a problem as it has this option on iTunes?

How long do they usually take to recharge -this one was recharged for about 3 hours two days ago and is at one bar again and is charging again now.

Sounds like it could be just age sadly, they certainly start to lose charge quicker as they get older like mobile phones do and that might account for the sound quality especially if the new songs are doing the same thing.
