wifi / wireless question

Ok, I have a desktop in here with a wireless router from TalkTalk. I didn't buy the dongle so therefore it's not wireless and is connected with ethernet cable. However, that isn't the problem.

I'm thinking of buying a laptop so I can take it to bed with me, instead of sitting tied to a room with no tv and is freezing cold.

Average range of a wireless router?
If a laptop is wifi enabled, would I still need to buy the dongle to go with it?

No you won't need a dongle if laptop has wifi.

I can pick up the single from my neighbours wireless router about 8 doors away, if that helps with range and my laptop is an antique now at about four years old!

In a house, WiFi transmission is more affected by walls, floors, large electrical appliances etc. than distance. Particular things to watch out for are steel beams between floors (often an issue with houses that have been converted or extended) and metal studwork in plasterboard walls (often an issue in modern flats).

Have you got a friend with a wireless laptop, or perhaps a PSP, iPhone or other WiFi device? Get them to come round and try out the connection in your bedroom .

You do not need a WiFi dongle to connect a WiFi enabled laptop.
