I'm so frustrated! I have a Powerbook G4 laptop but a lot of sites crash when I visit and a number of things won't work. So I guess I'm out-of-date?

Can I just install a new OS - 10.5 and up? Is this simple or are there Things I Should Know?

I do hope somebody can help me - I use this laptop for my (self employed) work and EVERYTHING!

Tiger should work on most things, it isn't THAT old...

...have you updated to 10.4.9?

....and if you are using Safari, make sure you have the newest version (3.2.1)

Oh thank you goth for coming along - I hoped you would

I haven't updated to 10.4.9 so will try that, also do Java and Flip4mac (whatever that is). Glad you think Tiger should be ok for a while more, so maybe all I need to do are these update tweaks.

I'll report back, many thanks for your help!

i think I have a sort of Catch 22 thing going on with Safari - I can't update it because my OS is too old, and I can't download new OS because Safari is too old...

But I will try again.

....just checked my twins' Mac Mini (the only Tiger computer we have). The latest version is 10.4.11 (so it would seem that my 7 year olds have updated the computer without me knowing. Hey Ho). The latest Safari is working on there, too, so it should work on your Powerbook.

...if you are having difficulty with Safari, you could wriggle round it by downloading another browser.

(you could use this to update Safari, if you like!)

...try Firefox, Opera or OmniWeb

thanks, for this info. Do I have to back anything up or can I just install? (feeling foolish that your 7 yr old didn't need your help upgrading but I do )

...no need to back up anything, all files are unaffected!

Just install the OS, it will sort itself out.
