I'm pretty sure I have been scammed by Talktalk. Please help!

Hi, I had a notice while using my laptop recently that said it was infected and my details were compromised etc, so I turned it off and re started it. It then worked fine but was running slowly. I then received a call from Talktalk a few days later, so I wasn't surprised when they said that my account had been compromised. They told me what to press and showed me a page that listed all the errors. There were about 1800. He guided me through what to do, and then he was controlling my laptop for me. He said that this is a problem many customers have had and I will need to looses my internet access for 48 hours, in the mean time, someone will come and fit a new router. He said this will happen tomorrow. He said that I would receive £200 compensation. He asked if I had internet banking, which I don't, or paypal. He then controlled my laptop to set me up a paypal account. He told me that he'd accidently put 2000 in instead of 200, and that he'd loose his job if I didn't pay the extra back to him ASAP. He told me to go to my local Sainsbury's. I told him I wouldn't be doing that and hung up as I realised it must have been a scam. I've looked on paypal since and the balance is zero. I have closed that account and cancelled my credit card. I am just worried that they have access to my computer. Can they access it at any time and see all my personal info? When I get my new card, will they be able to access that info through my laptop?
I really want to leave Talktalk and go with another company. What do you recommend? Is there anything else I should do?

How do you know you were contacted by TalkTalk? Sorry but they could’ve been literally anyone. This is a really common scam.

It definitely wasn't Talk Talk you were speaking to I'm afraid.

I would contact them and let them know.

It's really common for scammers claiming to be from phone/internet companies. Most of us are with big providers so if they guess, they have a good chance of getting it right pretty often, esp over the course of a day where they ring hundreds of people.
I would contact my bank and get s9me very good anti virus installed on the laptop.

I really don't think that was talktalk ............ I'm sorry but you've been scammed, thank goodness you cancelled your card. They now have access to your pc so can see anything you do on it including banking etc. You need proper technical advice and help, you should bring it to someone qualified asap. Good luck.

Turn your computer off (use shut down not suspend). Take it to a reputable repair shop and get some proper advice and your computer cleaned.

They weren't errors. They were just messages in Event Viewers, which are normal even in a brand new computer.
You have been scammed, and not by TalkTalk.

Thanks everyone. They were definitely calling from a call centre as there was a lot of background noise and I was passed from one person to another a few times. They all sounded Indian, which is always the same with Talktalk.

You need to contact your bank, you gave some random guy remote access to your computer.

They were calling from a call centre yes, but it wasn't talktalk. These operations are massive, they need to be because not that many people are so gullible.

Phone talktalk and ask them if it was them if you don't believe us.

Well, I didn't know. I'd never heard of it. I only realised when he wanted me to pay back the excess money. How do you know if they are legit or not? I'm seriously rubbish at this sort of thing...as you can tell.

I do believe you. They just sounded so legit. They even knew my details. I think I'd better phone Talktalk anyway just to report it.

Please listen to me, my very recent job was specialising in fraud analytics. You have been scammed, I would bet my house on it, did you log into internet banking during the call?

Don't feel too silly and gullible, they can be very convincing. It's only got to be such a big operation because so many fall for it.

Golden rule is don't believe anyone who phones you is who they say they are. Find the company's phone number from another source and you phone them to sort whatever it is out.

Yes, ring talk talk now.

How do you know if they are legit or not?

Because legit companies would never take control of your computer, deposit money in your account or even know you had a virus.

Maybe you should run an online virus scan, Malwarebytes (the famous) probably has one, and so has TrendMicro and all the other proper sites.

Contact your bank and have replacement cards under a new number made out for you, maybe you need to discuss it even tonight (emergency number for card fraud etc).

Unsolicited calls are almost never to your benefit. Ask to call them up, and look up the number yourself in the phone book, never assume a number in the display is from who it says. Sad but true.

Contact PayPal and make them take your account away asap. Switch to a new email address.
