computer backup - laptop

I've been using Norton security for years, mainly because they include backup. As they're expensive I've been looking at using BT's free security, and doing my own backup. But now I'm wondering if I need to do a backup at all, my partner backs up the photos onto disc, do I really need to backup anything else that's on the laptop?
