Dm's laptop won't start up normally. Windows 8 Asus laptop, about 18 months old. Starts to the Asus logo page but hangs then flashes up there is a problem and needs to restart. I wonder if it lost power during a recent update so is struggling to load them properly. Is it possible to bypass this stage to start in Safe Mode - I seem that you need to repeatedly press a F key to get that option but can't recall which. I thought maybe she could then shut down and reinstall any outstanding updates. Sorry to be vague but dm is 150 miles away and not tech savvy!

I've found www.asus.com/support/FAQ/1008253/ . The first two blue screens are as she described. If she enables safe mode, can she then shut down normally and allow any further updates? Is that likely to resolve the issue? She only uses it for email, fb and Internet.

There will be a startup repair option within Windows that will run through and repair any corrupted files, which under most circumstances would solve your problem. It is certainly the first thing most repair shops would try with startup issues then hit you with a nice bill!

Check out a great guide here: www.howtogeek.com/131916/how-to-use-the-advanced-startup-options-to-fix-your-windows-8-computer/

It might look scary but follow it through step by step as its only a case of press this and click this - with a great chance of getting the problem sorted.

Thank you. It did eventually resolve itself. I think she was turning it off when the screen went into sleep mode but it was still running the installation.
