How to set up wired Ethernet connection

Am after some advice. We have a wireless virgin media internet set up. We have been told my sons xbox one connection could be improved by having it wired using Ethernet cable. Is this something that anyone can do or do virgin media have to come and do it? Also would the cable go from the gaming console to the modem or to the computer or to somewhere else.
Any advice would be appreciated

Thanks

Plug Ethernet cable from Xbox into back of your Superhub. I don't think you should need to do anything else.

Yeah just plug the cable into both the console and the hub, you can't get it wrong, it only fits in one way. The xbox will then go AHA THE INTERNET, and know what to do.

Thank you - that sounds easy enough. the hub is downstairs and xbox is upstairs though. One of his friends reckons its "hardwired upstairs" to something - not sure what that means

If someone has previously run hidden ethernet cabling all through your house and there is an outlet for it in the room where the xbox is, plug the xbox into that, and downstairs, plug the hub into a similar wall ethernet outlet. They have the same shape as the ethernet port on the xbox, which is how you'll recognise them if that's the case.

You can run Ethernet through your mains using special plugs, or youll just need to get a long cable.

Yes, if there is no existing cabling and the distance is too far or impractical to just run a cable, the poster above makes a good point. The special plugs you would be looking for are like this. You plug one into a wall electrical socket near your hub, and run a short cable to the hub from it. You then plug the other one in upstairs near your xbox, run a cable from that to the xbox, and job done.

Thanks Naoko - would those plugs be as good as running a cable. I've tried WiFi extender type things before and they don't improve the connection.

We've done exactly this for my son's PS4 as his PSN connection is woeful over wireless, despite much tinkering from me. We too have a virgin superhub 2 everything wireless (much better for wireless than the older superhub 1, phone up and moan and get it swapped if you don't have the superhub 2, trust me). All our many wireless connection in the house were fine, including 2 floors up, but the PS4 in the playroom behind the living room where the virgin router is was awful. We've done the Ethernet over plugs thing so have a box plugged in near the router, Ethernet cable into the back of the router (actually had tonvuy a switch as had run out of ports) and same in playroom to the PS4. PSN is still fairly crap but at least usable.
