Can anyone throw any light on why my iMessage isn't working?

I'm getting the messages on my iPad but not on my iPhone

Go to settings>messages and then check that iMessage is turned on, and your phone number is there in send & receive at - or email address if that's what you're using so you can get them on both.

Yay it works. Thankyou andadietcoke . iMessage was switched off. Don't know how that happened. I swear the phone has a mind of its own.

Although I don't understand why messages weren't coming through as texts .
