Mac 'Finder' query

OK, specifics in case anyone asks: iMac with Intel CPU, running OSX 10.6.8

I have used Windows for 20 years and the Classic Mac back in the 80s, and of course more recently, versions of Mac OS 9 and OSX. However, now I am using an iMac (or three) on regular basis, I want to find a way, when selecting files, to see the total space they take up.

With Windows XP and similar, selecting some files will usually show "X files selected, using Y MB/kB" whereas with Finder I see "2013 of 4985 selected, 190 GB available" (ie only free space on drive being shown).

I tried I (fortunately with only 18 files) and it gave me info on them individually - guess it would have crashed if I tried with 2000+ files.

Also, is there an easy way to identify folders holding large volumes (disk space wise) of files, without having to go down every folder of every branch and twig, to check ?

Did try some shareware the other day but it was of limited help, showing every file as a blob (so you could find large individual files, but not grouped by folder level of usage).

Finder totally sucks. When I first got my iMac i looked desperately for a cheap finder replacement which would give me more features but to no avail.

Anyway, the answer to your question is after you've selected the files you want, press CMD+CTRL+I

The answer to the other question is to put the folders into single folder list view (the middle option between icon view and hierarchical list view) and then go to "Show View Options" in the View menu. Then turn on "calculate all sizes" and you'll see how much space each folder uses, and you can sort them by that.
